Back in the good old days you only saw kids wearing costumes when Halloween rolled around. These days though, kids wear costumes all year long, especially when they are into roll playing.
You can find scary costumes, cutesy costumes, princess costumes and everything in between. They are year-round and make for great photography moments.
Today, I wanted to share some tips with all of you on how you can capture kids in a memorable photograph while they are wearing a costume.
1. Light – Make sure there is enough light! Natural daylight is best, so don’t be afraid to let them play outside in the sunlight. If indoors, try to capture the child near a window or use appropriate camera flash.
2. The Background – Be aware of what is behind your child. The background should appear neat & clean when possible. When there are too many things going on in the background, your child can get lost in the photo.
3. Use Props – There is nothing wrong with letting your child use props when it comes to posing for photographs! When props are involved, make sure they don’t obstruct the child’s face or distract from the action in the photograph. They should enhance but not distract.
4. The Perfect Angle – Take several photos at varying heights and angles to ensure the perfect shot! If your child is sitting on the floor, get down on floor level with them. If they are standing up, try shooting the photo from an upwards or downwards angle to get an interesting shot.
5. Quantity is Best – You will want to take a lot of photos of your child in various positions and locations. Having too many photos is better than not having enough.
6. Have Fun – Taking photos of your little ones should be a fun experience for both you and the child! Don’t get flustered or stressed out if you don’t get the perfect shot!

These are good tips for taking photos of kids in costumes. You should always try different angles and have good light, but the kids should love natural and artificial. It should be fun for them.
My daughter loves photography and knows about shutter speeds and exposure but many times the rules go out the window with kids. You want to make sure they are having fun and relaxed. Props and letting them pose themselves can help. I love when we can get outdoor photos. They have so much better color.
Great tips I think it is a great idea to take pictures of them outside like the picture above. She looks so cute and that costume is adorable I wish I had that one when I was her age. Have a blessed day.
