Changing Your Furnace Filter and Why It’s Important

August 25, 2014 by Shelly

furnace filterThere are a lot of little tasks that homeowners will have to take care of on a regular basis. One of those maintenance tasks includes changing your furnace filter at regular intervals. This task not only help to properly maintain your heating and cooling systems, but it can also provide better air quality throughout your home.

Why Change Your Furnace Filter?

The furnace filter is the barrier that helps keep your furnace components free from dust, dirt and other debris that may be flying in the air. If your furnace filter gets too dirty, it can cause problems in some of the furnace components. When there are problems, you furnace will work less efficiently, leaving you with higher heating costs each winter.

For those who suffer from asthma or allergies, changing the furnace filter is the key to maintain good air quality throughout your home. The furnace filter can trap a lot of pollen, dust and allergens that are already present in the home. If you do need to maintain good air quality for medical reasons, you can change your furnace filter as often as once a month for best results.

How to Change Your Furnace Filter

Changing your furnace filter is an important task, so it is essential to learn how to do it properly based on your specific furnace type. When you are ready to change your Honeywell furnace filter or other brand, you will first want to locate the area in the furnace where the filter is installed. You will then remove the current filter and replace it with a clean one. If you have a furnace model that uses a reusable filter, you can take out the filter, clean it, then reinstall it once it is dry.

Routine maintenance checks should also be scheduled with your local HVAC professional so they can keep your furnace heating in the winter and keep your air conditioner cooling properly in the summer. With regular filter changes and a properly maintained system, you will have one less thing to worry about as a homeowner. This seemingly small job will also give you big benefits with better air and a more efficient system overall, letting you enjoy the time you spend at home.

I change the air conditioning filters regularly but I have an oil hating system and have the company clean it twice a year. I never looked for a filter in the basement unit, so maybe I shall have to check that out.

I never realized this was so important before, especially considering I have allergies. I’m going to check ours tomorrow!

I know you don’t want to hear this but I don’t use my furnace (heat) or my air conditioner in my apartment. I do have both, lol, but I just put on or take off clothes! Environment is nice but I do put up with the earthquakes so it’s a give and take.

This is one of those things that I am quite a bit anal about. I change mine every two months using filters meant for three. I write it on my calendar so I don’t forget. It really makes a huge difference in how much dust is in my home. I only wish I didn’t have two to change each time.
