Last month we took an extended vacation down to the Jersey Shore. We love it down there and try to get down a few times every year. I took a boat load of pictures of some of the things we did while on vacation and over the next few weeks I will be sharing some of them here on the blog during my “Almost Wordless Wednesday” post.
Today’s photo is of the Cape May World War II Lookout Tower that is near Sunset Beach in Cape May. It is New Jersey’s last free-standing lookout tower and has been completely restored.
Visitors can tour the grounds around the tower (free) or pay $5.00 and go inside. Once inside you go up a spiral staircase to the top which gives you fantastic views of the Cape May area. On the way up you can read the panels and learn the history of the tower and see photos.
Nearby the tower is the famous Cape May Lighthouse, the Concrete Sunken Ship, a Beach Bunker leftover from the war and other various fun things to see and do.
If you have never visited Cape May…you really should! It is a gorgeous area and one of our favorite places to visit at the Jersey Shore.
I didn’t realize there was a lookout tower from WWII at Cape May, but given its geographical location, it makes perfect sense. It’s scary to think that U-Boats were right off the Atlantic Coast, and how easily things could have been much different if Germany had moved more aggressively toward the United States. Thanks for sharing your photo.
I have never visited Cape May and since my son now lives in New Jersey it will definitely go on my list of things to do. I did not realize that there still existed World War II Lookout Towers, so this is an interesting historical site.
