Children’s Books to Empower and Make a Difference by Maria Dismondy

Do you have children in your life? Most of us do whether it is your own child, grandchild, niece, nephew or a child you care about. I want to tell you about some books that I received for review that are very special. They are written by children’s author Maria Dismondy and all have a moral or ethical message. I am in love with these books. Not only are they well written for the age groups of the children they are meant for but they are beautifully illustrated. I have many great grandchildren and as I read through the books when I received them I was deciding which child would benefit most from each book.

The first book I read is Spoonful of Sweetness. The book is for newborn to age three. It tells us that babies learn from from the very beginning by others smiling, being kind, developing friendship, responsibility, empathy, respect and courage. I never thought of those attributes developing at such a young age but now see how our actions help our babies develop these things from the very beginning. My granddaughter is expecting in October and wants these books for her child. She is very excited for her baby girl to learn from the beginning.

The next book is Pink Tiara Cookies for Three. It deals with a subtle form of bulling, empathy, friendship, developing a sense of fairness and individuality. It is about two little girls who have been friends most of their lives and a new little girl who moves in across the street. One of the girls is accepting of the new girl but the other selfishly wants to exclude her. She learns to accept others as they are and not be so judgmental. My daughter-in-law read this book to her four year old granddaughter in my presence and I was so proud when my great granddaughter asked, “Why is that girl being so mean to that new girl?” This book is geared to ages 5 to 9 years old.

The next book, The Potato Chip Champ, was written for children 5 to 9 also. It is about two boys who are completely different. One, Champ, has everything and wants more. The other, Walter, is less fortunate and grateful for everything in his life. He is empathetic, kind and generous and shares a love of baseball and potato chips with Champ. There is a baseball contest that has a prize of a truck load of potato chips. Champ wants to win more than anything. Unfortunately he breaks his leg and is unable to continue in the contest. Walter wins and wants to give the truck load of potato chips to the Champ, who broke his leg. Champ learns about humility, friendship and generosity.

The last book is Maria Dismondy’s newest book and will appear as an off Broadway children’s musical late in 2014. It is Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun. This is actually my favorite of the books. Lucy lives with her grandfather, who is her friend as well. He teaches Lucy not everyone is the same and others like different things. But everyone has a heart. Lucy is true to herself and because of that is bullied. Lucy loves her lunch of spaghetti on a hot dog bun and her beautiful mane of hair. Ralph makes fun of her. Ralph bullies her every chance he gets until he gets in trouble and you guessed it Lucy is the one who saves him. Ralph learned about kindness, forgiveness, generosity and courage. This book is aimed at children 5 to 9.
