7 Lawn Mowing Safety Tips
I love summer! The smell of fresh cut grass is one of my all time favorite scents ever. Every time I see someone cutting grass or harvesting hay, I have to roll down the window and smell the air! From the time I was just a kid of 8 or so, I was mowing lawns. First at my Grandmother’s home when we would visit during the summers and then at our own home where I would mow 1/3 acre each week or more, depending on rain. I loved cutting grass and I was really good at it.

Now that summer is in full swing, lawn mowing is at its peak! Dig out the lawnmower from under all of those winter cobwebs and get to work. But first, it never hurts to have a friendly reminder about safety around lawn mowers, so here are some tips for you!

7 Lawn Mowing Safety Tips

* Children should never be outside in the yard playing while someone is mowing the grass. As a matter of fact, you should keep pets, children, older adults, etc. inside the house or in a different part of the yard while doing lawn care.

* You may be tempted to wear ear buds and listen to music, movies or audio books while mowing the yard but its a safety risk that you shouldn’t taken. If another person is yelling for help, you will never hear them.

* Electric and gas powered equipment should be professionally serviced at least once a year. Only use machinery if it is in proper working condition.

* When the weather starts turning bad, finish up and get inside. Don’t try to squeeze in the lawn mowing while a storm is moving in.

* Always wear closed shoes and proper clothing when mowing lawns. Sticks, rocks and other debris can shoot out and cause injury.

* Do not take children, pets or unstable adults for rides on riding lawn mowers or other equipment. While you may be tempted to do it, it is a safety risk for you both!

* Utilize a buddy system whenever possible! If you are going out to do yard work, let someone else know that you are going out and when you will be back inside. If you are not finished by the stipulated time or soon after they hear the mower stop running, they can come to check on you.

Be safe this summer! Supervise kids while they are using the equipment and around others that do too.

These are great safety tips for mowing the lawn. I would add to make sure you have applied sunscreen and to wear sunglasses. Moreover it is easier on you and the mower if you mow more often and don;t wait for the grass to grow too much.

I actually enjoy cutting the grass but I have to go against one of these tips. I use a riding lawnmower and it’s loud. So I must wear ear/noise protection headset. I’m can’t go without them or I end up with a migraine every time. Fortunately I live in a neighborhood where there are always a lot of people outside so hopefully they would hear someone calling for help. One more tip: You should make sure you have walked your yard and picked up anything that could be thrown by or caught up in your mower. Thanks for sharing these safety tips!

We always try to let someone know when we will be outside for awhile. The heat and sun can be dangerous. You don’t even realize you are overheated or dehydrated until too late sometimes. It’s best to have someone there just in case. Also, make sure to wear sunscreen and take care of yourself. I think it’s hard not to try to squeeze in that extra row or two of grass to finish before the storm, but you are right and why chance it…..Let’s face it the grass and weeds will still be there waiting for you to mow, and you want to make sure you aren’t hurt and can. Great tips and reminders!

Great tips. I’m glad I live in a townhouse where someone else does the lawn and I can smell it inside my house.
