Sequels are always fun to read especially if you enjoyed the first novel or you enjoy the author. I was pleased to be able to review the second book in a series from a new author this week. Her first novel Tangled was great so I was hoping that the second would be just as good.

Overview: When spontaneous and carefree meets cautious and responsible, falling in love can get just a little Twisted
There are two kinds of people in this world: the ones who look first, and the ones who leap. I’ve always been more of a looker. A planner. Cautious. Then I met Drew Evans. He was so persistent. So sure of himself. He made it easy to leap with him.
Did you think Drew and I were going to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after? So did I. But life is about choices, and Drew already made his. In fact, he tried to decide for the both of us—but you know that’s not my style. So I came back to Greenville, to spend some time alone . . . sort of.
Because old habits die hard, and sometimes you have to go back to where you began before you can move ahead again.
My Thoughts: The first novel was excellent and one I really enjoyed so I was excited to be able to read where the relationship with these 2 strong characters was headed. I was a bit concerned as I started reading because I kept thinking – who are these people? You are literally thrown into the story a year or so after the previous book. There was hardly any tie in into the last book and honestly, I had to strain my brain to remember the previous storyline to tie the characters together, especially when you are thrown into a steamy scene in the first chapter. I read a lot so a few simple paragraphs that detailed where we left off would have really helped. Plus it makes it so much easier for those that have never read the first book.
Regardless of that, the author continued in the familiar writing style with most of the book written in the first person as Kate. She does it really cute too just like she was sitting with you and pointing out people… See him sitting over there… It is a fun and very different approach that makes this book very memorable. As the book proceeds through their very hot relationship and start to hit the inevitable bumpy roads, you can really feel Kate’s pain. The very end is written in Drew’s point of view and gives a great insight into him as well.
I really enjoy this writing style as it makes the book just flow and you are actually involved with the characters and can feel their love, joy, pain or whatever their emotional state is. The author does a great job with that and I know it must be very difficult to write in that style.
For a second book, I did enjoy it. I wish that it included a bit more along the lines as the first book with more glimpses into their family and professional lives instead of just the very personal view, a lot of which really was twisted and a hot mess. But regardless, it is an enjoyable read that will stand the test of time. Just make sure you read the first book, Tangled, first to really experience the full effect of Twisted.
I cannot wait until the third book comes out! Emma Chase is an author to watch with her awesome talent and interesting writing styles.

I think this might be a pretty good summertime read! You could take it to the beach with you!
Any book that makes me “strain my brain” is not the book for me. I just don’t have the attention span to deal with it. But if it is a sequel or something that I really want to learn about I just might stick with it. Seems like I have heard of this author before…perhaps here!
Great review Chris. I really like that you included what you didn’t like about the book. It sounds like a series I would be interested in reading or listening to on audio book. I drive a lot so I am really into audio books and am addicted to Linda Howard’s books. I will have to check out Emma Chase now. I thought the titles of her books were pretty good too. I agree with you though when I am reading a second book I would like a little recap from the first book so I can remember who is who and where we ended. I tend to stop reading if I don’t know what is going on or who is who.
This author does seem to have an interesting writing style. I guess what I shall have to do is to get both books and reading them one after the other. That way I shall have the connections I need from Tangled to better understand the second book., Twisted.
