I have to admit, I can be a slacker when it comes to healthy eating. It is not that it is hard to make healthy choices, but with my schedule, sometimes it is so much easier to go for the quicker easier choices. Open a box of this or a bag of that and poof dinner is done. It is so easy get caught up in what is quick instead of what is better for your health.
I have been working on making better choices and educating my hubby on the days that he cooks for me. Carbs and I do not mix well, but I love them! So my options have been to make some type of meat and pair it with veggies and a salad and ditch the carbs when possible. But with salads you are still looking at lots of fat in the dressings and such. Who knew eating healthy takes so much energy?
What tips do you have to keep your family on the clean, healthy eating food train? Simple tricks that we can all use and incorporate – especially the teen son! He is a bad carb addict too, but has been ditching the soda, so I am proud of that.
It is wonderful that your son has stopped drinking soda. I am trying to get my husband to drink less diet soda.
I don’t know your tastes, but you could make some vegetable loaves, like zucchini bread, slice them and freeze individual portions which could be pulled out and defrosted or toasted when you are hungry. Another choice is make your own energy bars with fruits and nuts or simply precut fresh carrots, celery etc. and refrigerate or freeze them until needed.
Good for you for ditching the soda. It is not healthy at all. I have a dessert every day. It is just a little piece of chocolate or a small amount of chips. I do not overeat on junk food and I drink a lot of water and eat healthy. But a person has to have a good treat once in awhile.
One of the best pieces of nutritional advice I ever received, and now give, is to stay away from processed, packaged food. Period. If the package has more than two ingredients in it, don’t eat it.
I am working on this one…. its tough! I need to hit the Farmers Markets now that the harvests will be coming in soon. That will help. I am really good about drinking water and unsweetened tea, thankfully!
I gave up soda several years ago. I mostly drink water with an occasional SoBe as a treat. I keep junk food out of my house. Oops. Now I want some potato chips. Good thing there aren’t any in the house.
I am trying to eat more healthy my body craves salads. Just this afternoon, I had to buy all the fixings for a big healthy salad but I also bought croutons and blue cheese salad dressing so it’s really not all that healthy. I remember a time when I only squeezed lemon on my salad boy I need to get back to those days. To be honest…. I LOVE the potato and we need to break up! I can skip breads but I love me some mashed potatoes, french fries, hashbrowns, and chips. A lot of times we will only have a veggie course and a meat course from dinner. I am trying but I need to try a lot harder now that I think of it. Thanks for the great post and have a wonderful weekend.
LOL Heather! I can so relate to the love of the potato! Thanks for the laugh!
My daughter is amazing at eating fruits and veggies actually. She loves fresh broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and celery with salsa. This gives it a zip she says. You can also put salsa on your salads even add low fat cheese, low fat sour cream, and beans to make it a Mexican salad. Making your own salads and dressings help cut down on processing and fat. Fruits can be chopped up and tossed with oatmeal, yogurt, cereal, peanut butter, or even eat strawberries with a fiber one brownie to give it a sweet snack feel. When doing potatoes, mash up 1/2 the potatoes and do the other half cauliflower or use broccoli slaw for fro pasta in some dishes. For quick grabs, they now have single serve apples with low fat caramel dip or bags of cut up veggies.
ohhh great ideas! Thanks Sherry
I am trying to drink more water and not buy junk food. I also snack on vegetables when I am hungry.
