Craft Project – Decoupage Easter Dessert Plates

Craft Project - Decoupage Easter Dessert Plates

Easter is only a few short weeks away and if you haven’t already started your Easter craft projects, now is the time to do so! Last year I found a bunch of clear glass dessert plates at our local dollar store and I picked up eight of them so I could make these darling Easter dessert plates.

You can make up eight to ten of these glass plates in just one afternoon and use them for Easter and/or give them away as gifts. I think they are cute and they were really simple to make.

Tips: These plates are not dishwasher safe! You will need to just wash them off with a damp dish cloth and don’t submerge them into a sink full of water. Always towel them dry after using them.

Decoupage Easter Dessert Plates

Supplies Needed:

inexpensive glass plates
foam painting brush
decoupage (I used glossy finish)
scraps of cotton fabric, a little larger than your plates
disappearing ink pen
scissors
several sheets of newspaper

Lay the newspaper down onto your work surface as this can get a little messy. If you don’t have any newspaper you can lay down an old plastic table cloth or parchment paper to protect your table surface.

Lay your plates down onto the back side of your cotton print fabric and trace around your plate with a disappearing ink pen. Using your scissors, cut out your fabric about 1/2″ an inch past your traced line. (fabric should be slightly larger than your plate).

Dip your foam brush into your decoupage medium and then coat the back side of the plate. Place the fabric down onto the plate with the right side touching the plate (so that it shows through to the front side of the plate). You will want to use your hands to smooth out the fabric if any wrinkles occur. Wash out your brush and let your plates dry for two full hours.

Once your plate has dried, use your scissors to trim off any access cotton fabric. Use your foam brush and dip it back into the decoupage medium and coat the back side of the fabric. I like to really apply it thick so that it seals it good. Once done, wash out your brush and let the plates dry for six full hours or overnight.

I’ve always wanted to try decoupage, but never worked up the nerve–but this plate is beautiful!

This is really pretty, yours came out so nice! I would like to get back in decoupage. Back in the day (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), we used to take a man’s black metal lunch bucket, and decoupage that. They would all be very personalized, and we’d use them for handbags. I think your plate has inspired me to start getting crafty again!

These would look good on a wall in different shapes and sizes. You could make some up for every holiday and have an interchangeable decor piece that’s in your home but out of the way too. What a great idea!

  7. That came out beautiful! I often go to thrift stores to look for special plates for desserts and tidbits – it never occurred to me to jazz up a plain dish – what a great idea!!!
