Favorite Bird Species – Sea Gulls

March 19, 2014 by Shelly

Sea GullsGood morning! Happy Hump Day! Yay! Yesterday was just crazy busy and now I am behind on my work. I need to crack the whip today and get things done. We are halfway to the weekend and as usual, I am looking forward to the weekend getting here. A month ago I hinted around that I would have some “big” news to share and next week I should be able to finally share it! Yay! I hate keeping secrets to myself!

Today’s Topic: Now that Spring is in the air, I have noticed that a lot of our seasonal birds are coming back in! Our resident barn owl has been hanging out in our backyard again and I love seeing her when she visits. We usually only see her March through November. She is back! I spotted a few sea gulls and a humming bird last weekend too! Do you enjoy seeing the birds? Got a favorite bird species that you like to see?

Like another commenter, the older I get the more I appreciate the birds! And, my late grandmother was such a bird fan – always had a feeder of some sort everywhere she lived and a bird book by her side, so in her memory I watch them, too. My favorite sighting of the last week was not only a huge grey owl, but one of his (her?) hairballs (I am sure there is a proper name for these but whatever!).

My mother instilled a love of birds in my when I was just a kid, and to this day, I think of her whenever I see a bluebird or cardinal, her favorites. Cedar waxwings are among my favorites, but chickadees have a special place in my heart. I used to love hawks, too, but since they began feeding on the visitors at my bird feeders, I don’t like seeing them around the house any more. We actually have eagles that live near here, I never tire of seeing them.

Here in Downeast Maine, we’re still in the grip of winter, and my seasonal flock of ducks is still hanging around. I have yet to hear a woodcock, and it will be another couple of months before the hummingbirds come back. The goldfinches are still wearing olive drab, and the loons are still in their winter plumage, too. I look forward to watching the changes in the year-round residents and to welcoming the migrating species back.

The older I get the more I love seeing the birds and really enjoy them more and more. It is difficult to pick just one species there are so many lovely ones. I love seeing the Robins because the remind me that Spring is here. I also love the hummingbirds they are so pretty.

I love hummingbirds but we don’t see them often around here. I love bluebirds and we do have alot of them, as well as cardinals, finches, and blackbirds. I do not like blackbirds…. 🙁

Well I will have to stay tuned for the big news. I am good at keeping secrets though. I love birds and my fave is the lovely peacock. I don’t get to see them up close too often but boy they are beautiful, aren’t they?!

    Congratulations to the 3 winners.
When you see all the birds coming back you know that spring is here or almost here. I don”t have a favorite bird, but I enjoy seeing the blue birds, cardinals and robins the most. At times we have flocks of black birds and perhaps swallows – so many they cover the lawn and make quite a racket.

I like teeing all the birds come back and seeing them outside now since I can go out without freezing. But it was a little cold yesterday. I see mostly Red Robins where I live, and crows. But I do not like the big black crows. There is a bird that lives in my tree in the backyard and he sure chirps a lot! Probably because it has warmed up!
