Crime and Punishment

March 4, 2014 by Shelly

crocusflowersGood morning everyone! Happy Tuesday!!! Well, I knew I would get sick and sick I am! I have been busy taking care of everyone else for the past few weeks and I now I am sick too. With that said, I am going to force myself to go out later today to a soft pretzel making factory to learn how to make them. Once back, bedtime for me!

Today’s Topic: How do you feel about crime and punishment? Do you think we are tough enough on crime? Do you think the penalties for committing a felony crime are stiff enough or do you feel we need to make those punishments harder & more severe? What are your thoughts on how we can lower crime rates in America?

It is amazing that all of us feel this way and came up with some practical ideas on how to fix the system. So, if we can do this…why are the politicians not doing it? Why is it that every election season we hear about crime but once elected NONE of them do anything about it?

Those criminals get better healthcare than people on the outside that have no damn insurance and that certainly is not right. They should NOT have TV, DVDs, Radios, etc. in there. Give them books, YES but not other forms of electronic entertainment. Murderer’s, Rapists, Child Molesters, etc. should NEVER be left out again and PAROLE should be abolished in those types of cases. MOST of them just re-offend and for the few who don’t…well, their crime was severe enough they shouldn’t be left out in the first place for a second chance.

Yes, I am a HARD NOSE about this! We need to crack down on crime and definitely have harsher sentences. In addition, the rich people need to stop getting slaps on the wrist and be treated like every other criminal out there.

I hope you are feeling better soon. Sounds like you got run down with so much on your plate.

Crime and punishment in this country is a joke. I saw some show on tv where one prisoner got out of prison then killed a grandmother just so he could get life in prison because he wanted to stay in there forever. That is scary! I think the death penalty needs to be mandatory here in every state! and none of this lethal injection crap either! I also think we could take a lesson from other countries where things are sooooo bad the prisoners are trying to break out not in!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed reading all of your comments today on this topic and I agree with all of them! Crime is out of control in this country and criminals have it pretty damn good in jail. They don’t have to worry about paying rent, paying utility bills, buying groceries, healthcare and everything. Makes me sick! I am tired of hearing about their “rights”. If you commit a serious felony, you should NOT have anymore freaking rights!

    Congratulations to the winners.
Crime and punishment is a tough topic. I think in general the lagal system is so incredibly complicatad, expensive, and the neverending appeals system makes everything impossible. I find often that the punishment does not seem severe enough, but I do understand that prisons are overflowing and expensive.
I remember reading an article a while back about privatizing prisons and that made a lot of sense to me. But, I also live in Texas and prisons are what we do here.

No fun being sick so I hope you get better. I watch all those crime shows and one of my many careers was a paralegal so I have an interest in this. I do think the justice system needs revamping and also believe there are corrupt problems within. No easy fix and will be slow to change I’m sure.

    Congratulations to the 2 winners.
I am sorry that you are sick and after visiting the soft pretzel company (I hope you will tell us about it) try to rest.
I think criminals need to be trained to do certain jobs so that when they are released they do not return to criminal activities. They also can be put to work outside of jail wherever needed.

Hope you get to feeling better.

I think punishment often fails to meet the severity of the crime. Need to get tougher on the penalties and once the criminals get out of jail, we should bill them for the costs of their incarceration.

Also, very wealthy also have a different court system They get away with stealing millions and billions of dollars on Wall Stree and never get charged for breaking laws.

What is really sickening to me is that a lot of jails and prisons allow prisoners to make 50 cents a day or whatever it is to do jobs in the prison…like the machine shop, cafeteria, library, etc. That is total bullshit! They should be paying tax payers!

The first time I arrived in Singapore (via plane in the middle of the night) I was astounded to see slews of men in jumpsuits on the side of the road, picking up trash, trimming weeds, cutting grass, etc. My driver explained to me that convicted criminals don’t sit around in jail at night – they get out and essentially clean the country and do infrastructure work. That is what our convicted criminals should be doing, even if it mans training them for the work – even better for them!

crime and punishment is a tough one….but here are some ideas that i think would be worth a try…. i’d like to see much more time for violent offenders. white collar criminals should have to financially or through work for the victim pay back for their crime.
i think it’s fair that after being found guilty of murder in the first degree the family who lost a loved one should have the option to decide the sentence.
i think instead of giving criminals a free ride, they should work to earn their keep, and grow their own food. it has always bothered me that criminals have warm beds, free food, free medical, free clothes, cable tv, gyms, libraries, etc. when there are homeless servicemen living on the street with none of that and millions of children going to bed hungry in this country every night.
and personally, i think anyone who sexually assaults or murders a child, a senior citizen or any vulnerable person should never be let out of prison because they have proven by those acts they have no soul, no limits, and (from everything i’ve read) will almost certainly repeat their actions.

ok, that is my rant for the day.
