Movie Review: Romeo and Juliet

February 19, 2014 by Shelly

Romeo and Juliet Movie Blu-Ray DVDHow many of you are fans of the classic Romeo and Juliet story? Personally, that story has always been near & dear to my heart even though I am not a sappy type of gal. With that said, I want to give you some information about the new updated & modern version that I think many of you will like.

Romeo and Juliet was just released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 4th, 2014.

Synopsis: William Shakespeare’s epic and searing love story has been revitalized for a whole new generation by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes* and acclaimed director Carlo Carlei. Douglas Booth and Academy Award® Nominee Hailee Steinfeld** lead an extraordinary ensemble cast as Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed youths who fall for each other in spite of their feuding families. Filled with lush, enchanting imagery amid its original setting in Verona, Italy, this legendary tale of romance remains timeless and transcendent…and as powerful as ever.

*Original Screenplay, Gosford Park, 2001. **Supporting Actress, True Grit, 2010. **ACADEMY AWARD® is the registered trademark and service mark of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

My Thoughts: When I was younger I used to love to read romance books and watch romance movies. I guess like most young girls, I loved to fantasize about my own future husband and the romance that we would share. As I got older, reality set in! From time to time now…I will sit down and watch a good romance flick if I think it will be good.

Recently I was given a complimentary copy of the newly released Romeo and Juliet to watch and I decided to invite my BFF Renee over to watch it with me. She loves sappy movies and I knew this one would be right up her alley. That girl can read a dozen romance novels in just a week and trust me, she works full-time outside of her home!

The movie stars Hailee Steinfeld who plays Juliet and Douglas Booth who plays Romeo. Damian Lewis, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ed Westwick and Paul Giamatti also star in the film. I had never heard of any of these actors until I watched this movie and I have to admit, they did a great job with the parts that they played. It is nice to see some fresh talents hitting the films.

Overall, I thought this modernized version was pretty good. There were a few small parts where the film seemed to lag and got a little boring but overall it was entertaining to see. I think if you enjoy classic love stories, you would enjoy this modern take on it.

Disclosure: I was provided with a complimentary copy of this film as a member of the Fox Home Entertainment Insiders Club. I did not receive any compensation and my thoughts & words are 100% my own.

I didn’t realize that another Romeo and Juliet was coming out. This movie has been done so many times, but I still want to see it. Each one seems slightly different, and the acting really affects the story. I’m glad the story was enjoyable and the acting was good. Hailee Steinfeld is really popular right now it seems. From her True Grit roll to now starring in 3 Days to Kill. I saw her on Good Morning America this morning.

I do enjoy romances and love stories so this is a movie I would probably enjoy watching. I was worried that the actors would not do justice to the original story/play , but your review has convinced me that did not happen.

This looks like a very good movie. I like love story movies set back in the med-evil times. I like the actors and want to see this movie. I will have to check it out!
