The Stress of Having Family Members in the Hospital

February 24, 2014 by Shelly

crocusflowersGood morning everyone. I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was very busy and today, I am just totally exhausted!

My Mother-in-law finally came home from the hospital late on Friday. She is in her late 80’s and is having some medical issues. Then on Sunday morning my auntie was admitted back into the hospital for the 4th time in two months. My auntie is more or less my grandmother and we are her care takers along with my mother. Auntie broke her back for the 7th time in 12 years in early December. She then fell again in early January and broke it again along with her hip. She has severe osteoporosis and due to her age (88) and other medical problems, she isn’t a candidate for surgery. A few days ago she came down with pneumonia and isn’t responding to treatment at all. She resides in a nursing home but is now back into the hospital and things are not looking good. Sigh, so much stress I can hardly stand it. Prayers would be appreciated.

When it comes to dealing with hospitalized family members who you love….how do you deal with that stress? I know it’s stressful and hard especially when all of that typically falls onto 1 or 2 people in the family. I really wish that others would step-up to help out and do their part but all you get is excuses from them. Sigh.

That is so hard. I was caretaker for my mother and it is so emotionally draining to do that. I’m glad that you have family to support you.

Thank you everyone, having your support and prayers means a lot to me and my family. Right now we are taking shifts so that one of us is always with her. I am pulling the night shift again tonight which I did last night too. I am functioning on 2 1/2 hours of sleep and my butt is dragging. Hoping she rests more tonight so that I can doze on/off in the chair beside her. If not, I got homework to do to occupy myself.

Will update you all as I know more. Thanks again ladies, you all are very special people!

My heart goes out to you and your beloved Auntie. I hope the fact that you have other family members with you helps you through this incredibly difficult time. I was my mother’s caregiver and I understand your anguish all too well. Seeing your loved ones in pain is a heartache like no other, but knowing that you love them and have been there for them is a great comfort (if not now, it will be later). My best to you.

Thanks everyone. She is a mess, they only give her 15 to 20% chances of beating this. Very hard.

    Congrats to the two winners.
So very sorry to hear about all the medical problems in your family. I went through something similar about a year ago when my 86 year old grandmother was in and out of the hospital for several years with heart problems, several small strokes and other issues. I also remember just how difficult it was on everybody else in the family and close friends and just how emotionally and physically straining it is to always have to be in several places at the same time.
Prayers to you and your family, hope everything gets better.

My prayers are being sent your way. I know how hard it is to take care of elderly relatives. I am taking care of my Dad and it is so hard. He has dementia and can not remember anything. I hope you try to keep a positive attitude, but I know it is frustrating. God bless you, and I will be saying prayers.

    Congratulations to the 2 winners.
My prayers are being said for you and your family. I am very sorry that your Auntie is not responding well to treatment. I know how difficult it can be to take care of loved ones and sometimes the problems never seem to stop accumulating. I admire you for all you accomplish with these difficulties and your own pain as well.

Thank you Jo-Ann! Your kind words are appreciated. We are going to have a family meeting later on today. Sigh, I can’t stand this!

((((HUGS))) and prayers your way. I feel your stress. I am the caregiver for my frail 85 year old Mom and my disabled brother. There is always something medical going on here, and my stress level is through the roof! Let’s support each other, we can use all the help we can get!!!!!

Thanks Sandy, that means a lot to me. I was at the hospital from midnight last night until 6am this morning. I am emotionally and physically just drained. It is not good. Doctor said that she has C-Diff infection (highly contagious) and has lost a lot of blood through her stools. She is refusing a blood transfusion. She also has double lung pneumonia and hasn’t responded to antibiotics. She is 90% confused and out of it. Just breaks my heart. I thought I was going to have a stroke this morning when he said “This isn’t good and we doubt she will pull through”. I had to leave the room and go break down for awhile.

Being a care giver is one of the hardest jobs in the world. I know EXACTLY what you go through and you are in my prayers.
