Activities During Power Outages

February 5, 2014 by Shelly

pine cones and snowGood morning everyone! Well, it was another rough night here in my neck of the woods. We got slammed with an ice storm and the ice & freezing rain is still coming down. The PA turnpike has been closed for hours due to a big fatal accident and I currently have a large old pine tree down in my backyard. ugh!

We got TONS of ice and trees down in our backyard again with on/off power issues. I am not impressed!

Icy Winter Storms

Today’s Topic: At some time or another, I am sure you faced a power outage. During those times, what do you do to occupy yourself and to keep busy? What is the longest time that you have ever went without power?

Sadly we get them all of the time. We get tornados, hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, snow storms, ice storms, thunderstorms, etc. I think the longest we went without power was almost a week in duration with hurricane Sandy. We did get hit with 2 snow blizzards in one week a few years ago which took out our power for 4 days. I get REALLY bored, REALLY quick when we don’t have power!

    Congrats to the winners.
Currently -13 degrees with no wind, but a wind chill advisory for later with -25 to -35 degrees. I’ve been very lucky – in the 30 years I’ve lived in this house I think the power was out for two days after bad thunderstorms.

In southeast Texas we lose power in the summer a lot because of the grueling heat. It is not that bad then because it is light so much longer and you don’t have to worry about being cold, at all. We did lose power on Thanksgiving right after everyone was done eating, thankkfully. But, with a house full of 25+ people we had to get creative with candles, camping lanterns and a fire in the fireplace and getting a few good card game s going.
When it is just the two of us we may just play on our phones and I tend to read.
I used to live in Missouri, and the longest poweroutage I ever had there was over 2 weeks because of an ice storm. That was no fun and I went to the movies and ate out a lot.

We lost the power for 5 days – including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! We took a lot of walks, went to movies and read – a LOT! No big deal , though. Relative to other countries we still have it way too easy!

    Congratulations to the 2 winners.
Our longest time without power was Hurricane Sandy. We had to leave and go to our son’s place after a few days. We have had a few minor outages today uptil now , but the power came back. During outages we like to play board games and read.

We had a terrible ice storm in November 1996. The power in most of the City I live in was out for 7 days. And this was during Thanksgiving season. It was so terrible. Tons of trees were ruined and everything was covered in a sheet of ice. Right now it is so cold. It is only 5 degrees right now. I can not wait for it to warm up!
