Last week I published my great auntie’s recipe for a homemade Chocolate Devils Food Cake and this week I thought I would follow up that post with her recipe for homemade chocolate frosting.
What I love about this recipe is that its very simple to make and whips up quickly with ingredients you most likely have on-hand.

This recipe will make enough frosting for one cake or you can double the ingredients for enough frosting to do a double layer round cake or extra large sheet cake. If you like a lot of frosting (a thick layer) then I would recommend triple ingredients! This is one of those good old-fashioned recipes from the 1960’s that our moms and grandmother’s used to make.
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
- In a large saucepan over medium to medium-high heat combine all of the above ingredients. You will want to stir it constantly to keep it from scorching. Once it begins to boil, boil for exactly one minute. Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes before using it.

I have never made this type of frosting . I was always worried about getting a scrambled egg, but your directions are so clear that I shall try this recipe soon.
I was looking for a chocolate icing recipe, I have a chocolate cake mix but forgot the frosting! This sounds delicious, but now looks like i’ll have to seek out your Auntie’s devil foods cake recipe too and try it too!
I do sometimes make my own frosting, but I’ve never made one with an egg in it. I bet this is really rich. On my must-try list! Thank you.
This sounds good! I usually just throw together a buttercream, but this sounds just as quick. Next time I’m in a baking mood I’ll have to give it a try.
I always make homemade frosting because it always tastes so much better. I like your chocolate frosting recipe and am going to make it. It looks easy and a great frosting for my sister’s birthday cake that I will be making.
I have never made frosting that has to be cooked before! It looks delicious but I don’t know if I am an advance enough cook to make it right!
Quick and easy, just how I like it. I can even put it on my healthy gluten free snack bars, sort of naughty and nice food. Pinned to recipes.
Ooh, sounds yummy!
Looks quick and yummy. I do have all the ingredients at home. Who needs a cake?
I loved that recipe that you posted last week and now this looks great. I have never made my own frosting I always thought that was a little too advanced for me but I think I can do this and I like the total time is only eight minutes. Thanks for sharing your great recipes.
