Movie Review: Runner Runner Starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck
My daughter and I are both huge fans of Justin Timberlake and even though he is a successful singer, he can now add a successful actor to his resume. On top of that, who wouldn’t love a good crime drama that has two hot & sexy leading men? Well, you get that with this movie staring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck.
Runner Runner was just released on blu-ray and DVD on January 7th, 2014.
Movie Synopsis: Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck star in this high-stakes crime thriller where the lure of easy money is the riskiest bet of all. When Princeton grad student Richie Furst (Timberlake) believes he’s been swindled by an online poker site, he heads to Costa Rica to confront gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Affleck), the man he thinks is responsible. But Richie will soon face the ultimate power play as he finds himself caught between Block’s promises of unlimited wealth and the zealous FBI agent (Anthony Mackie) trying to bring him down.
My Thoughts: I know Justin Timberlake has acted in several other movies but this was the first one that I have seen him in. Ben Affleck has always been on my radar and I love the action & drama films that he is typically seen in. I have to admit, Timberlake surprised me with his excellent acting abilities.
The story kind of started off slow for me but it did pick up pace. As the story goes along you can see how the characters interact and to no one’s surprise Richie doesn’t trust his new boss. I mean, who would? I would never trust a casino owner with a ten-foot pole.
While the film location is absolutely gorgeous and the acting superbly done, I felt the story line was predictable and lack-luster. Richie want’s to play with the big boys and make big money…but then once he is in, he sees what his new boss is like and the lengths his new boss will go to, to make that money. One of the characters that really stood out to me was the FBI agent (Anthony Mackie) who I thought was fabulous in this role.
Richie (Timberlake) struggles with working for his new boss and making a boat load of money and with doing the right thing & helping the FBI agent take him down. Sigh…what will he do? How will it turn out? Well, you will have to buy the DVD to find out!
Overall, I am giving this film a 6 out of 10 stars on my rating scale. I thought the acting was fabulous, the cinematography was beautiful but at times the story line was lack-luster & predictable.
