Movie Review: In the Heat of the Night
Like a lot of people, I enjoy sitting down and watching a good crime drama unfold. There is something about bad people, doing bad things who eventually get caught that excites me.
In the Heat of the Night was released on Blu-ray DVD on January 14th, 2014 and I was sent a complimentary DVD to watch a few days ago.
In The Heat Of The Night – While traveling in the Deep South, Virgil Tibbs, a black Philadelphia detective, becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of a prominent businessman when he is first accused of the crime and then asked to solve it in spite of the efforts of the bigoted town sheriff. They’re forced to work together in a desperate race against time to discover the shocking truth!
Special Features:
* Commentary with Norman Jewison, Lee Grant, Rod Steiger and Haskell Wexler
* Turning Up the Heat: Movie-Making In the 60’s
* The Slap Heard Around The World
* Quincy Jones: Breaking New Sound
* Theatrical Trailer
My Thoughts: As I previously stated, I love a good mystery and crime drama. Hubby and I sat down a few nights ago to watch this movie and within minutes, we knew it was a good one.
There are a lot of twists, turns and plots to this crime drama as it goes along and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you think you have figured out the story line 1/3 of the way through…let me tell you, you didn’t! I have seen a lot of Sidney Poitier movies and this one is just fabulous, perhaps one of my favorite ones that he has acted in.
The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the bigot sheriff. Personally, I am tired of any type of bigotry being put into any television show, movie, book, whatever. Time to move on from that and I didn’t feel it needed to be in this story line. I am entitled to my opinion and others can disagree.
Overall though, it was a brilliantly acted movie with plenty of suspense to keep you watching and guessing where the story line was going. It was interesting to see detective Tibbs and Sheriff set aside their differences and work together to solve the crime.
I won’t tell you how it ended as that would be a *spoiler* and I don’t post those! Would I recommend this movie to others? Yes I would! If you love gritty crime dramas that are suspenseful, this one is for you!
