Kid’s Crafts – Paper Hearts Window Decorations for Valentine’s Day

Kid's Crafts - Paper Hearts Window Decorations for Valentine's Day

Last week the Princess came over for a visit. She is 4 1/2 years old and loves to sit down and craft with her Nanny. I keep a whole bunch of crafting supplies in a box for when she visits so we primarily use up my scraps leftover from my own craft projects.

We decided to make some paper hearts to decorate our large front window for Valentine’s Day. Today, I wanted to share with all of you how we made them. It is a great project to do with younger kids.

You can use a glue stick or glue dots to stick your red paper heart doilies onto red, pink or white cardstock. Use scissors to trim around the heart. You want to use cardstock which will show through all of the “lacy” areas of the doilies.

From cardstock, cut a smaller heart shape and glue it to the center of the paper doily. We did ours free-hand and didn’t use a template or pattern. For most of our hearts we used pink cardstock but you can use white. Decorate the center cardstock heart with Valentine’s Day stickers or alphabet letters. Some of ours say “Hug Me”, “Love Me”, “Kiss Me”, etc. Typical sayings you see around Valentine’s Day.

Cut the sheer 1/4″ wide ribbon so that it measures 5″ in length. Fold it in half and staple it to the top of the heart using pretty colored staples. You can also use glue dots if you don’t have pretty staples lying around.

Your paper hearts are now completed and you can hang them up in your windows as Valentine’s Day decorations. Even though these supplies came from my scrap box, almost all of them at one time or another came from our local dollar store.

The one large red cardstock heart came from the dollar store and was plain. We decorated it with a satin ribbon bow and some solid white alpha stickers. You can do that too if you don’t want to waste time cutting things out and using paper doilies.

Very cute! It really brings back memories of when my kids were young and we decorated for all the holidays! Maybe in a few years I can make some Valentine’s Day hearts with my grandson!

These are adorable valentines. I used to do a lot of decorating/crafting for Valentine’s Day when my kids were young. I didn’t realize that one could buy pretty staples and I shall now look for them at Michaels. Thanks.

Those are adorable! I have a ton of scrap paper and I just got the call that school is cancelled tomorrow due to a freeze. Thanks for the great idea.

Very pretty and a fun craft for you to do with her. I like that you made your own without a template but also used a store bought to just add touches to.
