These days we are all looking to create fast, delicious and healthy meals for our family. For me personally, I gave up purchasing canned goods several years. I switched over to frozen and carton foods for health reasons and because I simply think they taste better. Frankly, I am pretty happy with our switch and I am glad that there are better alternatives out there for all of us these days.

How many of you have Become Carton Smart and know what this is all about? If you are unfamiliar about purchasing your foods in cartons, I am going to give you a little education about it today.

One of the reasons you will want to make the switch is that purchasing foods in cartons is an eco-friendly alternative. Cans and plastic containers are NOT biodegradable and cartons are! Furthermore, we don’t know what leeches into our foods via plastic containers and metal cans, so switching to cartons is just a smart & health decision. You can find foods packages in shelf stable cartons aka Tetra Paks and they taste delicious and fresh, a lot better than canned foods!

Here are some of the reasons why I personally use them and love them!

• Tetra Pak® cartons are made of 70% paper, a renewable resource, from selectively harvested, re-grown trees that are FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council).
• Cartons use 1/3 of the packaging compared to cans.
• Cartons are space saving, easy to store and open. Keep your pantry neat and toss your can openers.
• The unique packaging process preserves the flavor and nutrients of food without the use of preservatives.
• Recycleable and in fact result in 60% less landfill waste than cans
• Cartons are re-closable so you can use what you need and save the rest for later.
Plus, I find that foods packaged in cartons have no funky after-tastes like foods that are packaged in metal cans.

I received a kit from Pacific Foods to try out for all of you. I got a carton of Pacific Foods Chicken Stock, a carton of Pacific Foods Pumpkin Puree and a carton of Pacific Foods Cranberry Sauce. These are all food items that I personally use on a regular basis.

How many of you have ever tried a baked pumpkin pudding? Well, I used my carton of Pumpkin Puree to make some of the best baked pumpkin pudding ever! We enjoy serving it slightly warm and with a big spoonful of frozen (thawed) whipping topping on the top. Delicious!

We used the Pacific Foods Chicken Stock to make a big pot of homemade chicken and rice soup. This is a great soup to make and serve any time of the week. We like to make up big batches of it and freeze some for later use. Just last week we made a big batch of soup which the family quickly devoured.

My daughter loves cranberry sauce and eats it all year long. Cranberry sauce is something that most of you serve around the holidays but we serve it around here all of the time. With the Pacific Foods Cranberry Sauce you can serve it straight from the carton or use it as an ingredient in one of your recipes. I once used a carton of this to make some homemade cranberry bread and it was super yummy!

I’ve used them with tomatoes before.

I’ve tried to win these several times and so far no luck but would love to try them. I think they’d be great to take along camping and you don’t need a can opener!

I’ve never heard of this and didn’t even know some of these products were available in cartons. I’ve seen stock in cartons and milk, of course, but not pumpkin puree. Interesting. I do make sure to recycle, but I can see where these would be much more environment friendly. Thanks for the information.

I would use more cartons if more were available to replace canned fruits and vegetables. I already use some for stock, juices and milk. It is a very good idea to try to be more eco-friendly
