Easy Applesauce Spice Cake Recipe

December 19, 2013 by Classystaff

Mom has a big selection of recipes that she made over the years that have become family favorites. One of my favorites is this Applesauce Cake recipe. The card I got it from originally said it is a bar recipe, but when I made it, it was more of a cake, so we are going with cake. Either way you look at it, it is full of flavor and so good! This makes a moist cake that will be sure to please!

I made it pretty with sprinkled powered sugar.

I love recipes like this because they are tried and true and handed down from family members. I also like using apple sauce because then I can cut down on the fat content.

This looks yummy! I’d love to try it with some fresh apples!

My mom was big on sheet cakes and made applesauce cake often. You can really use less fat in the recipe with the applesauce and same with prunes (although some people don’t like the taste). Lighter and less calories without all that icing–just as pleasing too. You could use Christmas stencils and powdered sugar for designs if you want to go all out!

Now this is my kind of cake! I love all cakes really, but sometimes I prefer one that isn’t slathered in sweet icing! This reminds me of a spice cake my mom made when I was little. Not sure if it was a “from scratch” cake, but I never got the recipe. Will try this one soon!

That looks fantastic. How do you get the squares on top?

My husband just used a cooling rack and dusted the powered sugar over the top. You can use a doily or stencils too by laying it on the cake and dusting the sugar on it then carefully remove what you used.

I have never had this before but it sounds really great for the season and I love that ten minute prep time. Thanks for sharing this one and Merry Christmas.

I love it when you post tried-and-true family recipes! This simple but lovely cake is now on my to-try list. This past apple season was a good one, and I canned a lot of applesauce, so this cake will be a good opportunity to use some of it. I imagine it’s very moist cake, between the shortening, egg, and applesauce. Thanks!
