Big Box Stores vs. Small Business – Holiday Shopping

December 19, 2013 by Shelly

redholidaytreeGood morning everyone! This week is really flying by and I am pretty happy about that! For 9 weeks we were super busy around here on the blog and it is nice having it slow down now that the holiday is almost here. We could barely keep up but we did it!

Today’s Topic: When it comes to holiday shopping do you do a lot of your shopping via the Big Box Stores and Chain Department Stores or do you actively seek out small businesses? For myself personally, I seek out small businesses all year long when I need to buy products and/or services. If I can’t find what I need, then I will go to a big box or department store. I made that change about 12 years ago and it is just the way I prefer to shop! I also actively seek out American-Made products and even if they cost me a little more, I still prefer to buy them. So, what kind of shopping habits do you have?

I wish I could say I always shop small and local, but out here in the willywacks, it’s much easier and a lot less expensive to shop online, especially when I can use my Amazon Prime benefits to ship gifts without additional shipping costs. There are a few stores in the nearest town that I patronize when I can, though, for things I won’t need to mail out.

I’m one that thinks about the gifts all year round. I squirrel away gifts I won too, which means storage space is limited but saves me time, money and sanity in the end. I wasn’t too surprised to hear about Target’s security breach and think this is also something to keep in mind when shopping locally with shops you know and trust. You just do your best and try not to stress too much in the end though!

A belated congratulations to the 2 winners.
Although you were super busy you all did a great job on your blog – as usual.
I guess I do a mixture of all 3 – I shop at some thrift shops and stores near by , online and a t some department stores too. I prefer American made, but if I find a great deal I would probably purchase it even if it was not made in the USA.

I so agree with you! Although because my family is a plane ride away I do need to order some presents online for delivery to my Mom’s for Christmas, I do try to buy from owner-operated online stores. I also make a point of staying out of department stores and big-box stores – you’ll never catch me in a Walmart!!

I am proud to say that this year I was able to do all my christmas shopping at small local businesses through flea markets. Antique malls and festivals. I do not mind spending a little more money knowing that a local businesses is being supported and that I may have gotten a very unique gift.
