I was raised around spicy food. It was in almost everything we ate. We would have salsa with our chips, salsa on the tamale, the tostada, in the burrito, and on, and on, and ON! So when I received some gifts for review from the Armadillo Pepper, I was extremely excited. I am a self-proclaimed “Tough-Girl-That-Can-Handle-Really-Spicy-Food. Also, I am the type that likes to try new things. So when I heard about chocolate being mixed with peppers, I just HAD to try some! Well, I can’t say that I have NEVER had chocolate with spice, because technically chicken mole (yummy) has some chocolate and hot sauce in it, but spicy chocolates? This I had to check out.
When I went to check out the site for Armadillo Pepper, I was amazed at all of the spicy foods that they offered. Everything from chips to nuts and in-between is offered with a spicy kick that I love. They even have pickles! But they also have plenty of products without the heat and spice too! Lots of great foodie gift baskets for those that love to eat…. and who doesn’t!

One of the items I had received was a box of their new Chocolate Ghost Pepper Truffles. These are chocolate truffles that were mixed with ghost pepper. I had to try them! They were SO good, but very, very spicy! Beware for the kick, the chocolate truffles warn you themselves, they are hand-made into little skulls! (I’m pretty sure that’s a universal sign in any language, LOL)
What’s funny about my experience with the ghost pepper truffles was that when I tried them, I thought they were hardly spicy at all. Boy, was I WRONG! They were super spicy with a heat that sneaks up on you! I suppose they were in the shape of a skull for a reason… These rich, dark chocolate skulls are filled with smooth, creamy dark chocolate ganache spiced with finely ground ghost pepper. Upon my first bite I liked the crunch of the outer shell. As the sweet piquant dark chocolate settled on my tongue, I was lured into a false sense of security by the smooth, creamy ganache, because the ghost pepper heat slapped me silly with a large punch! It’s so good, it’s scary!
I also received the Habanero Pepper Chocolate Bark, it is a sweet, creamy milk chocolate bark is lightly dusted with finely crushed fiery habanero and finished with a drizzle of dark chocolate for a flavor combination I could not forget! I enjoyed these very much. They are spicy but not like the ghost pepper spice. This is definitely a great spicy chocolate!
