Slow Cooker Polish Sausage & Sauerkraut Recipe

Slow Cooker Polish Sausage & Sauerkraut Recipe

I love using my slow cooker (crockpot) and use it a few times every week. I usually use it to make the main course to a family meal but at times I also use it to make a delicious slow cooked dessert.

A few weeks ago I used my slow cooker to make some sausage and sauerkraut and what I love about this recipe is that it’s super easy to prepare and only requires a handful of ingredients. It is not spicy so if you want to add some heat to it or spice it up…you will need to do that all on your own.

When I make this I always whip up a large batch of mashed potatoes. Some of my family members spoon it over the top of the mashed potatoes and some of them enjoy it on the side. However you serve it is up to you!

Slow Cooker Polish Sausage & Sauerkraut Recipe

2 to 2 1/2 lbs. Polish Sausage, uncooked
6 to 8 oz. Bag Sauerkraut (don’t use canned)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon parsley
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon rosemary

Cut the polish sausage into 3″ long pieces. In a large skillet brown the polish sausage on all sides. Remove from heat. Place the sausage into a slow cooker and cover them with water. Simmer on the high heat setting for 1 1/2 hours. Drain liquid from the bag of sauerkraut. Pour sauerkraut into the slow cooker and then add in your salt, ground black pepper, parsley, oregano, thyme and rosemary. Stir to combine everything together. Cover. Reduce heat to the low setting and slow cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until done. Serve immediately.

Looking for a new slow cooker? I have three of them and use them all of the time. The last two that I got…I purchased from Amazon and love them!

  1. I saw something like this at Whole Foods prepared foods, and it smelled and looked sooo good. I didn’t realize how easy it is to make in the slow cooker. I can’t wait to make it!

I never thought to cook sauerkraut for a long time at a low setting, but it would go beautifully with a lot of meats, not just the Polish sausage. Thanks for the idea and the recipe.

  3. Kraut & sausage – my idea of YUM! I’d never thought about making it in the slow cooker – great idea. I want mashed potatoes with mine.

This is a really yummy recipe to make in the Slow Cooker. I love cooking in the slow cooker this time of year. You just throw the food in and it is done. I will have to try this recipe!

Sound like a delicious recipe. We make our own sauerkraut by lacto fermentation method and it would be perfect for this recipe!! thanks for sharing!!

  6. This is a favorite dish of mine. Great recipe!

  7. I love meals that incorporate sauerkraut, but I’ve never tried a recipe like this. I also like how you make this is a slow cooker.

I also add the apple juice and apples. I also add carraway seeds ( I grew up near Poland and we just like carraway seed there). Instead of mashed potatoes we ususally eat this with mashed peas (or sweet pea puree as people call it nowadays). Thank you for sharing this recipe.

    • I too make mine with applesauce or an apple. I am 1/2 German as my Mom was raised in Germany. She taught me to make my kraut that way as well. Altho today I don’t use caraway seed, but just a dash of pepper. I have converted everyone I know to now enjoy eating sauerkraut. Just had some 2 nights ago! Delish!

  9. This looks delicious! I have a similar recipe…but it includes apple juice and apples. So good on a cool fall night! This recipe looks so easy…thanks for sharing!

I don’t have a slow cooker but this recipe attracted my attention when I saw POLISH sausage, both because I love Polish Sausage and because both sides of my family as far back as we can find is all Polish. As a matter of fact both sets of my grandparents came straight from Poland and even though I don’t know any of it, (hard language!) I remember my grandparents speaking Polish to each other and to their friends, but the YUMMY Part was all the various authentic polish food family recipes handed down. ohhhh yummy!
