Fall and early winter are wonderful times. For many of us, this is the best time of the year. The sun is still out most of the time, but we aren’t drowning in sweat. We can wear sleeves and boots and don’t have to worry yet about our outfits being ruined by rain or snow. We can be fashionable without having to cover it up with a bulky coat or worrying about melanoma.
At the same time, these transitional seasons (fall and spring) can be tricky. The weather is unpredictable. A storm could erupt at any moment. It’s freezing cold in the morning but sometimes blazing hot in the afternoon and then teeth chatteringly cold again in the evenings. Trying to find a way to look good and feel good is a challenge. Here are some tips to help you get through it….
1. Pay attention to measurements
Being able to buy super pretty womens sweaters for winter weather is one of the best things about this season. But beware! You want to leave enough room to slip on at least a thin shirt underneath. This way you don’t have to sweat through the fabric if the temperature rises. You can take the sweater off for a while and keep it nice. Don’t go too big or the sweater will be bulky! You want about an inch (maybe an inch and a half if you don’t want it to be clingy) of breathing room in your sweaters.
2. Carry Reinforcements
Long sleeved tops are great but they aren’t always warm enough. Still, you only get to wear that awesome fall jacket for a few weeks a year. What do you do? Carry an extra layer of warmth with you that you can put on and take off as you need it. I’m a big fan of the Chilly Jilly Wrap because I can bunch it up and put it in my bag when I’m not wearing it. It keeps me warm without forcing me to carry or wear a bulky sweater or coat.
3. Thigh High Boots
Knee high boots are soooo…okay all the time, really. But this season, according to the Huffington Post, the thigh high boots are a must have. At first I was skeptical but when I looked at the pictures I could see how these boots could be handy. The extra boot fabric allows me to continue wearing the shorter skirts and dresses that I love during the summer without worrying that I’m going to freeze my legs off if the weather takes a sharp turn for the colder. It turns out these serve a practical and a fashionable purpose.
4. Hats Never Go Out of Style
A cute beanie cap folds up and easily stuffs into the corner of a purse or backpack. There are, of course, other hats that are cute and practical. The newsboy’s cap is making another comeback this year. I like hats with bills and brims to keep rain off of my face when showers spontaneously start to fall. And, as Glamour says, “DON’T forget a super cute hat.”

Hey I am my early-ish (lol) 30’s & I love to rock my thigh high boots…. super cute w/ leggings & a big comfy sweater! LOVE this tips ladies@ xx
Not sure I could get behind thigh-high boots, but I always have an extra sweater!
Thank for the tips–although my thigh-high boot days are about 25 years behind me! LOL
One thing I find essential during the transitional seasons is a light scarf. If my neck is cold, I’m cold, and a scarf can make all the difference. It’s easily carried in a pocket or purse, and can be worn with everything from a long-sleeved tee shirt to a sweater or jacket.
Great tips!! I live in Texas, so I always do layers. Often I need a jacket or sweater when I am indoors because it is so much colder there than outside, but then once that sun goes down you gotta put something on outside. I also like wraps and a love my scarves.
Great tips. Sweaters are too much for me – I’m always warm – but my daughter is the opposite. She has some dressier, fitted sweaters that she gets at her size then some she buys larger for comfort and to wear layers. Layers are a great part of fall. You can wear a long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve, a shirt under a half-buttoned top or a lower cut outer blouse with a shirt underneath. The added clothes give you options for changing in temperatures and can even dress up your outfit.
Boots are a must! They have really cute ones now that are warm!
I have always dressed in layers because I prefer short-sleeves indoors. I might have vest and a jacket or a jacket and a scarf to go along with the short-sleeved outfit and I have several cute hats. If I like it and think it looks good on me I don’t worry about if it is in style right now I couldn’t wear thigh-high boots because I would be too warm. In fact I usually had to carry a pair of shoes with me to change into when I arrived at work because I would feel too hot wearing boots indoors.
Even though I live in Michigan and do make some changes to my wardrobe from spring/summer to fall/winter… I still tend to stick to short sleeve or quarter length sleeves all year around because otherwise I feel overheated. I am actually comfortable In the cooler temps. Fall is my favorite season of all. : )
I am so happy hats are considered stylish. I LOVE popping one on to not only keep me warm and dry but to give me a more put-together look.
you gotta be careful though with the hat thing and the boots- make it classy not hootchie!
Great tips I love hats and wearing layers in the Fall and Winter months think I’ll pass on the thigh high boots though. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
