How To Make Homemade Playdough and Finger Paints for Your Preschooler

August 1, 2013 by Classystaff

With summer here, keeping the younger children active is something all parents have to do. One fun thing that kids love to do is arts and craft activities. Kids love to create and let’s face it, we can always use new refrigerator art! The kids love to show off their art work to everyone and are so proud of their creations!

Here are 2 projects are great for preschoolers and young school-aged children to do. You can let them help you make the playdough and paints so they learn measuring skills, reading skills and cooking skills. Afterward, they can have fun creating something great that they can show off.

How To Make Homemade Playdough

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups of tap water
4 tablespoons vegetable cooking oil
Food Coloring

In a large sauce pot, combine together the flour, salt, cream of tartar, water and vegetable oil. Heat this mixture over medium heat, stirring often until the mixture pulls away from the edge of the pan and becomes the consistency of dough. Remove from heat and cool your dough on a sheet of waxed paper. When it’s cool enough to handle, separate the dough into smaller balls. Place gloves on your hands and mix in the food coloring by kneading the dough. Once the coloring is mixed in, you can remove your gloves. Store dough in airtight storage bags.

How To Make Homemade Finger Paints

2 cups of Plastic Liquid Starch
1 cup of Ivory Snow Detergent Flakes
Food Coloring

In a large mixing bowl and using an electric mixer, combine together the plastic liquid starch and the detergent flakes. You will want to mix this until the volume has tripled in size. Pour mixture into 4 small plastic containers and squirt in 2-4 drops of food coloring into each container. Use a toothpick or wooden skewer to stir liquid to blend in the color. This homemade finger paint will need to be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator when not in use.

I have made homemade dough with my kids when they were young, although I think my recipe had less salt in it. However, I never made my own finger paints. That shall be a future endeavor when I have my own grandchildren.

Love it when simple, household items can be used for kids fun. We’ve made flubber and bubbles before. Get kids involved in making it nd that can be just as much fun as the completed product.

I haven’t seen a finger paint recipe before (no kids, so I haven’t really been looking). That looks easy enough and fun.
