Protecting Your Wealth with Estate Planning

Protecting Your Wealth with Estate PlanningMy hubby and I consider ourselves to be modest people, but we have been planning for our future and the future of our children & grandchildren. Now that I am 46 and he is 52…it is time to get our financial lives in order.

A few weeks ago we contacted an attorney to learn more about estate planning in Sacramento and how to go about it. After all, if something happens to us both, we don’t want the government riding in on their white horses and taking anything/everything away from our daughter, granddaughter and our new grandson. We plan on leaving any and all assets to them.

After we spoke to a local attorney about this issue, we decided to get online and do some additional research on our own. We found several online articles that gave out some great basic information, but we knew we needed to educate ourselves even more. We headed on over to Amazon and decided to purchase a book for newbies, to teach us the basics that we needed to know about estate planning.

We are definitely not wealthy people but we do have some real estate investments along with money market accounts, CDs and a savings account that we have had for many years. We do own a few assets too.

What it all boils down to is this…even those who are in the middle class bracket need to be thinking about estate planning and looking at how to make a will in Michigan or whichever state you are in. You need to come up with a plan to protect both your family and your assets, should something happen to you and/or your spouse.

Have any of you done estate planning? If so, got any tips to share with us? I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic if you are willing to share them.
