Hubby’s Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

Homemade Pizza with Spinach, Chicken, Tomato and Extra Cheese

Every two to three weeks we like to have family night and when we do…we get together and make a few homemade pizzas! While we could go out to the grocery store and buy prepackaged dough…we prefer the homemade taste!

This pizza dough recipe will make three round pizza dough. You can freeze the dough once prepared for later use for up to 2 months.

We used the dough to make chicken, spinach, tomato and extra cheese topped pizza along with my homemade pizza sauce. It was delicious!

Hubby’s Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

1/4 cup warm water
2 envelopes dry yeast
1 tablespoons sugar

Mix together the above three ingredients in a large mixing bowl; cover and let the mixture stand at room temperature for 6 minutes.

6 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
2 cups warm water

In a large mixing bowl mix together the vegetable shortening (cut it into the flour), salt, sugar and the 2 cups of warm water. Mix the ingredients from both bowls together, cover and let stand until the dough doubles in size (about 30 minutes). You need to use your hands every 5 to 10 minutes to knead the dough to help it to rise properly.

Once it has doubled in size…it is ready to use or freeze it for later use (break it down into 3 equal portions).

I used to make pizza dough more often. I should go back to doing it. My recipe had less sugar in it and some olive oil, but otherwise I used it to make large pizzas with different toppings and spinach ricotta calzones.

I have never been brave enough to make our own dough. May give your hubbys recipe a try. Looks good!

  3. I think I made banana bread once. That’s the scope of my bread making. It’s just never appealed to me for some reason. This sure looks good.

I would love to try my own pizza dough. It would be fun to make a pizza the way I like it. This seems like a terrific recipe!

  6. I made a pizza for dinner just last night. I usually make the dough in my bread machine, but for a personal touch, I add some dried oregano and dried basil to the dough. It gives the whole pizza a bit of extra flavor.
