Getting your family prepared to head back to school, can be difficult especially after a long, fun-filled summer. Here are a few of our favorite Back to School Tips to help you along the way.
1. Back-to-School Supplies Checklist – Backpack? Check. Pencils? Check. Safety scissors? Not Yet. Use the same checklist each time you head out to grab supplies, to keep track of what you have already purchased and the things you still need to. These are also handy if you have more than one child. Simply print 2, 3, 4 list and add their name to the top.
Since my son is a senior this year.. say it isn’t so, there have been some things I have learned along the way and I want to share with you. One thing is that the prices of school supplies are super low when it is back to school shopping time. Make sure to read the flyers of the drugstores and discount stores so you can get the best deal. Then when you do shop, buy extra! The products do not spoil and you will not find lower prices until the next school year comes long. I always buy tons of pencils, pens, notebooks, lined paper and even things they don’t use in school but I use in my home office – Sharpies, 3×5 cards and more. Huge savings!
Another great tip is to make sure you buy a good backpack at the beginning of the year, especially if the kids are older and have heavier books. I have found myself buying 2 in a school year because I tried to save money. Not worth it.
I never do back to school clothes shopping until around October. Since my son has grown so much, where we live, he is in shorts 90% of the year. Buying new jeans and such for winter does not pay as he has outgrown many from August to October and November. I buy his clothes as needed for the best fit and use. The same goes for shoes!
Finally, by letting my kid choose his school supplies, shoes and clothes, with a small amount of guidance and a nod to the budget, means that he does wear them and use all of his stuff. That means a lot more to me than fighting over brands!
