Last weekend we had a lot of our family and friends over to our home for our first big family picnic of the season. We had 34 people at our home, including kids and had a great time!
Once it was over…it got me thinking about all of the classic American picnic foods! (at least what our family considers to be classic). Anyway, I thought I would list them out here for all of you and find out what you all consider to be classic American picnic foods too! Here is a list of what we had at our gathering.
Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Barbecue Sandwiches
Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Pasta Salad and Cole Slaw
Pickled Eggs and Deviled Eggs (we call them Angel Ova’s)
Baked Beans
Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Chocolate Cupcakes for the Kids
Watermelon and Tropical Fruit Salad
Olives, Pickles and a slew of Condiments
Regular & BBQ Potato Chips, Pretzels and Dip
Veggie Stick Tray with Veggie Dip
Miscellaneous: Sodas, Buns & Rolls, Beer 🙂
So, I would love to know what kind of American foods do you serve at your family picnics? Got any recipes to share with us?

Sounds like all the good makings of a great cookout. Games to play for everyone and for the kids. music, nice weather and everyone is set .Oh sun screen and lots of paper towels and wipes too. Enjoy
I agree with most of your list, but would definitely add more fresh fruit, including fruit pies. We might have pickled herring, not pickled eggs. I also think fried breaded chicken would often be there.
Those are all good choices. For our big reunion picnics, the sky is the limit. We have all types of salads and fruit. Baked beans, hamburgers and hotdogs are the main fare but normally there are a couple chicken breasts, too. My step-dad makes an excellent chili to go over the hot dogs. Desserts are typically home made ice cream, brownies, and pie. Chips and an array of beverages and wild kids complete the meal. 🙂
Most of those, but not pickled eggs. Deviled eggs – yes. Pickled eggs – no. Home made ice cream with everyone taking turns turning the crank.
