American audiences were first introduced to Swedish sisters Camilla Grebe & Asa Traff last year with their debut novel Some Kind of Peace, which garnered a starred review from Publishers Weekly. In the next chilling installment, More Bitter Than Death, psychologist Siri Bergman returns to investigate a brutal murder case centered in the dark world of domestic abuse.
Synopsis: It’s a rainy evening in a Stockholm suburb, a five-year-old Tilde is hiding under the kitchen table playing with her crayons, when a man enters and beats her mother to death in cold blood. Tilde can’t quite see the murderer, but she’s the only witness.
Across town, psychologist Siri Bergman and her friend Aina are meeting with their old friend Vijay, who wants them to host a self-help group for victims of domestic abuse. Over the course of several evenings, five very different women share their stories of impossible love, violence, and humiliation. At the same time, Siri finds herself at a crossroads…she’s carrying her boyfriend’s child, but is still beset by doubts & fears about making a lifelong commitment.
My Thoughts: I love books that offer a lot of mystery, action and intrigue and this book delivers! The first few pages of the book seemed a little confusing to me but once I got through Chapter #1 I was completely hooked! Matter of fact, I read 4 chapters in just one evening and had the book completely read in about 8 days. (Trust me, I don’t get a lot of free time so for me to read a book cover-to-cover in 8 days is a good book!).
There are main characters and minor characters in this book and all of them play an important part in the story. They all seem to have “baggage” and must work through all of that “baggage” to get on with their lives. At first I thought Siri might terminate her pregnancy since she wasn’t feeling secure in her relationship but was pleasantly surprised that she did go all the way.
I won’t tell you what happens at the end of this story but trust me, it’s a page turner that will hold you attention all of the way through the book!
