Time to Call Pest Control – Bees Infestation

April 4, 2013 by Shelly

Large Bee Hive NestLast weekend I started a new home remodeling project. I decided to tear down and rebuild our sunroom. The previous home owners never did upkeep on it and it was falling apart. Seriously, the woodwork was rotting, two of the windows were cracked and the flooring was coming up. I guess you could say…I was gutting it to the cement floor and wall studs.

While removing a portion of the ceiling I started hearing a loud buzzing noise and knew immediately there were some bees up in the ceiling. At the time I didn’t know how many. I pulled down several ceiling panels and was amazed at what I found lurking up there. It was a massive colony of bees and I mean MASSIVE in size! I had totally irked those bees off!

I got the heck out of the sunroom and closed it off to the rest of the family. Time to call a professional. After calling around I found an exterminator who came out the next day to take a look. He came prepared and went into the sunroom wearing a bee protection suit. After examining our ceiling he came out to give me a full report of what he found.

Report – It was mainly an old hive with just about 50 bees still living in it or trying to revive it. He wasn’t sure which was the case other than the hive (nest) had been there at least a year if not more. After consultation with the exterminator we opted to have the hive (nest) fully removed. He got the entire thing down in 2 large pieces and bagged it up. He then advised us to stay out of the room for the next 2-3 days to allow things to calm down.

Now that the bees and their “home” are out of there…I’m looking forward to getting back to my new project. I’m gutting that entire room. It’s getting a new floor, 4 new walls, a door, windows and a new ceiling. We’re going to use it as a partial sunroom and a partial pool room during our summer season since it sits at the back of the house.

If you come across a large bee’s hive or nest…I highly recommend that you call in the professionals to handle it.
