Are you feeling out of sorts? Tired and dragging? Suffer from migraine or other aches and pains? Better nutrition may be what you need and juicing is an easy way to get in lots of nutrients. That’s what I discovered on my search for natural energy boosters. Watching food documentaries like Forks Over Knives, Food Matters, The Gerson Miracle, and Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead made an impression.
I have a juicer and blender, so I put them to work and added green smoothies and juices to the mix. Adding them to my menu was good, so I thought a juice fast, even if just for a day, could be better. A reboot could work wonders. Or so I thought. My first juice fast attempt failed. I did not prepare for it, had no idea what to expect, and caved after the detox and withdrawal symptoms kicked in. I made it until right before my usual dinner hour before eating, but until then I had headaches, the shakes, and a wicked case of the grouchies. Guided feasts are available, but can be pricy and may not be customizable. Books are on the market, but may not give a realistic idea of what to expect. A recent release does just that and more.
Steven Prussack and Bo Rinaldi, penned The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Juice Fasting. This book covers all the bases – explains juice fasts and feasts, gives recipes, explains the benefits, and shares success stories. Prussack and Rinaldi know their stuff. Prussack is known as Juice Guru and Rinaldi co-founded Vegan Fusion Cuisine. The duo also hosted the first official Global Juice Fasting Day on February 15, 2013.

As expected from an Idiot’s Guide, the book breaks down and answers typical questions relating to juice fasting and feasting. Chapters on juicing for weight loss and cleansing are followed by a discussion on how to get the most from a fast. Chapters on short fasts and long-term feasts include suggested menu plans and tips on making it yours. There are six chapters of recipes, including one devoted to transitional meals to help one prepare for a fast. The abundance of recipes makes this a handy guide for anyone wanting to add a bang for the nutritional buck to the daily menu. The Creamy Kale Soup, sweet Raw Waldorf Salad (not what one would typically expect), spicy Cucumber Apple Celery Cilantro Juice, zingy Kale Mustard Red Grape Lemon Juice, and Tropical Paradise Juice are standouts. Less adventurous hubby enjoyed the fruit juices, especially the Apple Ginger Juice and Tangerine Pineapple Juice.
I’m not a doctor or nutritionist by any means, but I know how I felt after this last one day feast. I ate delicious, raw meals before and after the fast and spent a day enjoying a mix of fresh fruit, vegetable, and herb juices. I will definitely do it again now that I know what to expect and how to do it right. Prussack and Rinaldo nailed it and I am so glad they did.

I like books that explain everything in detail. I don’t know if I’d try juice fasting, but I am interested in all the different recipes. I know many of them are good for me and my digestion.
Oh I need this book. My sister is trying to talk me into going on a juice diet. I have been a little unsure because I don’t really know much about juice diets. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to learn more about juice fasting. Sometimes, I try to stick with just liquids as a way to cleanse my system, but it never lasts – it would be could to find out ways on how to really stick with it.
