Parental Guidance Starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler

April 6, 2013 by Shelly

Parental Guidance Starring Billy Crystal and Bette MidlerAre you a big fan of the comedy movie genre? If so, you need to check out “Parental Guidance” starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei and Tom Everett Scott. This movie was just released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 26th, 2013, so it’s available for purchase right now!

Movie Synopsis: Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei prove that laughter is relative in this hilarious comedy that’s fun for the whole family!

Old-school grandparents Artie (Crystal) and Diane (Midler) get more than they bargained for when they get stuck babysitting their type-A daughter’s (Tomei) overprotected kids. But things go from hectic to hysterical when Artie realizes the kids are running the house with their newfangled technology. By playing by his own rules, which include sugary snacks, old fashioned games and tough love, Artie manages to outsmart the kids and achieve the impossible- bring the family closer together!

Our Thoughts: Well…I am not sure where to begin here. I personally thought it was an “okay” movie, but definitely not in my favorites category at all. I guess it’s because I like some comedy but not what I call “stupid comedy” (slapstick).  With that said, my hubby is a huge fan of comedy movies and it’s his preferred movie genre to watch.

I guess my problem with it is that I couldn’t related to it at all being a mother and grandmother. I have never left my child or grandchild run my house under any circumstances…yeah, I know…bad me!

My husband though that it was a hysterical movie and he was laughing his butt off in several of the parts in the movie. The acting was well-done by Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei…but I really didn’t enjoy Tom Everett Scott’s acting job at all.

Would I buy this movie…no, but my husband would! Matter of fact, it was on his “must-buy” DVD list until we received it for our movie review. Hubby gives it 8 out of 10 stars on his movie rating scale and I give it 6 out of 10 on mine.

If you like “silly comedy”, then I feel you would like this movie. If you are more of an action or drama flick type of person, this movie wouldn’t be up your alley.

This is a family movie, but I can see how people would react to it differently. If you can’t relate to the role the actor is playing it is much harder to enjoy it or find it funny. From some of the blurbs I have seen I think it is overdone in someparts, but very funny in other parts.

I’m with you. I couldn’t wait to see it actually and watched it right away. I enjoy family comedies but think many often end up in the stupid category. “Okay” was exactly how I described it. It had funny moments and was an enjoyable watch but often too dramatic and went overboard in many scenes. I’m glad I watched it; family fun but a tad too much.

I want to see the movie. After reading your review, I am thinking it is a movie that we can watch with the kids. that they will probably get more enjoyment out of it then we will. They are like your husband and enjoy slap stick type humor. I really do like both Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as actors. Thanks for the review!
