In the past 2 1/2 years Pennsylvania has been really hit hard by mother nature. Just in the last few years, we have been hit by Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, an Earthquake, several snow and ice storms, and just recently we lost our power for 2 days from a bad windstorm.
As part of our emergency preparedness plan here in our home, hubby and I both invested in an iPhone Charger that runs off the power of the sun. This solar-powered investment has paid off biggie time for us the past few years.
While we do have regular iPhone chargers for our cell phones, these handy dandy solar-powered ones are really cool! Even when we don’t have an emergency going on, we do find ourselves using the chargers when we go out camping, hiking, hitting the beach or just when we are spending a lot of time outdoors.
We do have some advice to give to all of you who are considering purchasing one for your own cell phone charging use.
1. You want to invest in a high-quality one that utilizes mono-crystalline panels, which are the best ones out in the marketplace. These panels will capture the suns solar ray power quicker and retain that power for a longer period of time.
2. Look for one that has a built-in LED light in case you need to use it at night which will help you to locate your unit when you need it.
3. Buy a cell phone charger that uses a rechargable battery pack and use only high-quality rechargable batteries in it. We recommend staying away from those dollar store batteries which are not very powerful at all.
4. If you are like us, look for a charger that is light-weight (less than a pound in weight) and one that is compact in it’s size. We like to pack ours up in our backpacks, tote bags, etc., so a compact size is a “must” for our personal needs.
5. Familiarize yourself on how this type of charger works and use it several times before you need it in a real situation. Learning curves are always stressful if you wait until you have a genuine emergency and need to use it.
Investing in a solar-powered cell phone charger is a sound investment for your emergency preparedness kit.

This is a great idea. I have never thought about purchasing a solar iPhone charger, but I can see how it would come in handy. This is something I shall discuss with my husband.
What a great idea. I wonder if my daughters have even thought about a solar powered charger. Thanks for the tips as well. I’m definitely passing this on to them because being in New Jersey we too have had some real nasty Mother Nature events. 🙂
