Hubby and I sat down last week and took a hard look at all of our monthly finances and wow, we were really shocked to see where a lot of our money was going! We put out big bucks monthly on our mortgage, home owners insurance, life insurance, car insurance, groceries, medical & dental insurance, clothing and other life necessities.
After looking over our expenses, we decided that the first thing we want to do is find some cheap car insurance. We have two vehicles and have been with the same auto insurance company for over 20 years. Our rates have done nothing but go up over the years and we want to find something cheaper.
We got online and did a web search for the keyword cheap auto insurance and found a really great site that was super easy to use. You simply enter in your zip code and it scours the web for the cheapest deals on auto insurance.
We entered our zip code as instructed and within 5 seconds, we could request free quotes from companies like esurance, State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Liberty Mutal and Progressive. That’s right, all of the big insurance companies came right up!
What we liked about this is…we didn’t have to run around from web site to web site, entering the same information over and over again. This was a huge time saver for us!
After 20 minutes or so, we found a company that will give us an identical policy to the one we currently have and it’s $433 a year cheaper! Wow! Why didn’t we do this sooner? Geesh!
Now that we got that taken care of, it’s time to move on to the next budgeting task and get some of those other bills lowered too!
I am glad that you were able to find a cheaper car insurance. I hope you did as Ari suggested and looked at the fine print because too often what you think is a deal turns around in 6 months.
What I know about buying car insurance I learned from one of my relatives who works as a corporate underwriter for a company. He said that we should always read the fine print regarding the policy, i.e. whether it will increase after 6 months or a year. Also, he mentioned to look for any discounts that you can get based on your age, the car you drive, the amount you drive, how long you’ve been accident-free or didn’t have a claim, whether you have other insurance policies from the same company and if you have any security measures put on a car (or are already installed). Those are just some areas where you might find a possible discount. It seems like insurance companies will try to keep you as a customer for longer, so if you have an agent that oversees your insurance, maybe talk to the agent about your concerns. Sometimes they can bring the price down.
