Movie Review Chasing Mavericks Starring Gerard Butler

Chasing Mavericks Starring Gerard Butler

The movie Chasing Mavericks was just recently released on DVD and Blu-ray (released February 26th, 2013) and can be purchased nationwide. We were recently sent the DVD to review for all of you.

The movie stars Gerard Butler, Elisabeth Shue and Hollywood newcomer Jonny Weston.

DVD Synopsis: Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.

Hubby’s  Thoughts: I admit, I haven’t watched the DVD as it’s not my type of movie. With that said, this movie was perfect for my husband and 27 year old daughter to watch together. Friday night he had the daughter over for dinner and the two of them sat down to watch it together (father/daughter date night). Here is what they told me:

Both agreed that the story line was great with many heart-tugging aspects to it which kept you guessing on how this surfing coach/friend and student relationship was going to turn out. What really impressed them about this movie was the ocean and wave footage. Both agreed, this was the best part of the movie…seeing all of the beautiful ocean & water scenes.

Regarding the acting, they both felt that it could of been acted a little bit better and they were not sure if the 2 main characters meshed well together (as portrayed by Jonny Weston and Gerard Butler). At times…they felt that the characters felt “out of sync” with one another. This in no way reflects on the good story line but they felt it was important enough to mention in the review.

Overall, they did like the movie and enjoyed watching it. Regarding purchasing it…they would indeed buy it and add it to their movie collections. With that said, they both agreed that it wouldn’t be the type of movie they would watch over and over every few months.

Now please remember, everyone has their own “likes” and “dislikes” when it comes to films and even though they had some issues with this one, you all may love it to pieces!
