Grocery Store Hoarding When Storms are Coming

We live in the northeast. We get big storms year-round. During the winter we will get blizzards, ice and snow storms. During the spring and summer we get hit with thunderstorms, tornados and tropical storms. Ocassionally we’ll see a hurricane too! Storm prepardedness is something we’re familiar with and something that we do on a seasonal basis.

With that said…some people take things too far! For example…we had a snow storm come in last month and dump 4-5″ of snow on top of us. The 2 days before the winter storm’s arrival people went NUTS and raided all of the local grocery stores! Seriously, you would think that we would be shut-in for a month or two with how much stuff people were buying and hoarding!

Grocery Store Hoarding When Storms are Coming

When storms are approaching you do need to go out and obtain the basic things that you think you and your family will need. However, over-buying and over-stocking up is uncalled for. Wiping the store shelves clean is rude and disrespectful to your fellow citizens. You should ONLY buy what you think you’ll need for a week or two. By over-buying you’re taking basic essentials away from your neighbors, family and friends.

Last month when I was in the grocery store I saw several people raiding the store shelves. Buying a dozen packs of toilet tissue, 10 gallons of milk, 10 dozen boxes of eggs, multiple loaves of bread and so forth. ALL OF THE BASICS were gone within a few hours. Certainly YOU AND YOUR FAMILY don’t need 12 packs (containing 6 rolls each) of toilet paper! I’m pretty sure you can’t drink 10 gallons of milk in a few days? Plan on eating those eggs 5 times a day for the next 4 days? Come on now!

When heading to the grocery store don’t buy more than what you think you’ll need to just “stock up”. If you need those things for a few days…other families need them too. Be courteous, mindful and respectful to your fellow citizens!
