Movie Review: The Sessions starring Helen Hunt & John Hawkes

The Sessions starring Helen Hunt & John HawkesMy hubby and I are huge movie buffs and as of this day, we have over 3,000+ dvds in our movie collection. Today’s movie review is on the newly released DVD movie called “The Sessions” which was released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 12th, 2013.

The Sessions stars John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy…all of which are fine Hollywood actors and is based on a true story!

Movie Synopsis: The Sessions ACADEMY AWARD® Winner Helen Hunt joins ACADEMY AWARD® Nominees John Hawkes and William H. Macy in this triumphant true story about love, sex, desire…and making every breath count.

Paralyzed and confined to an iron lung since childhood, poet-journalist Mark O’Brien (Hawkes) has overcome adversity time and time again. But now, at age 38, he faces his toughest challenge yet: losing his virginity. With the help of a beautiful therapist (Hunt), a sympathetic priest (Macy), and his own unbridled sense of optimism and humor, Mark embarks on an extraordinary personal journey to discover the wondrous pleasures that make life worth living.

Movie Review: This movie is Rated R and that is mostly because of the nudity and the mature adult content. You do not want to view this movie with kids in the room due to that. This is a true story and from what I have heard, it’s a pretty accurate account of Mark O’Brien’s life and journey to lose his virginity.

Since he was a little boy, Mark O’Brien has been paralyzed and confined to an iron lung. This paralysis and medical disability has left Mark longing for an adult female relationship and more importantly, sex with a female. With the support of his priest, Mark gets in touch with a therapist (played by Helen Hunt) and begins his quest to lose his virginity.

In one of the beautifully acted scenes, his therapist explains to him why she is different than a prostitute and although it was a serious conversation between the two of them, hubby and I found it to be hysterical. Also during this scene, Helen Hunt strips down naked (I turned my head as I don’t like nudity in films), but hubby was more than pleased to see this scene…geesh, men! As time goes on, you really see the chemistry between Mark and his therapist blossom into something more deep.

There are some parts in the movie that I could personally do without (the nudity for sure) but overall, the movie was pretty good. The movie is a good mixture of seriousness, comedy and it definitely tugs at your heart-strings on the seriousness of his illness.

While I don’t think I would purchase this movie to add to our collection, hubby would! He really enjoys comedic movies and true-stories…I much prefer action/adventure flicks. I would give the movie a 6 out of 10 stars on my rating scale but hubby says he gives it 8 out of 10 stars on his.
