A Healthy Choice Salba Smart Chia Seeds

Salba Smart Chia Seeds

I’m a healthy food nut.  Not a hardcore one, but one nonetheless.  I add flax to my oatmeal and all baked goods (don’t tell the family).  I drink green juices and smoothies.  I eat and drink more produce these days than I think I ever have and it feels good.  I’m willing to give about anything a try and some things have stayed in rotation.  One thing I hadn’t tried was chia.  I’d look at a package and consider the purchase, but “cha-cha-cha chia” would play in my head and I’d put them away.  The folks at Salba Smart offered me the chance to try it – twisted my arm they did.  And I’m glad.

Salba Smart is a Colorado-based company dedicated to bringing awareness of the awesomeness of chia seeds.  These little seeds pack a powerful punch and add calcium, Omegas 3, 6, and 9, fiber, and protein to whatever they’re added to.  The best part of chia seeds?  The flavor is so mild they can be added to anything.   I viewed fan comments on the company’s Facebook wall, pulled out my bookmarks and pinned chia recipes, and got started.

First up was breakfast.  I added Salba Smart Seeds seeds to my oats on two occasions. First time I added them to cooked oats before eating and the second time I added them to a batch left to sit overnight.  The chia did not add flavor, but definitely made a texture difference.  I added a little more liquid to each to get the consistency I like and felt full a little longer than usual.  An interesting and welcome effect of the addition was the occasional crunch in each bite.  Score two for keeping chia seeds in rotation.

Shake with Salba Smart Chia Seeds At snack time, I added a packet of Saba Smart’s Chia Boost to a protein shake.  Instead of a thinner shake I expected from a powder mixed with water, it was thicker.   Almost as think as one mixed with half a banana.  I thought this was even better because there was no banana flavor, which is a plus for this banana hater.   Less sugar and more protein v. slightly thicker shake with a hint of banana.  Score another point for Salba Smart.

I’ve heard of people using it in baked goods in place of some of the flour and as a replacement for eggs.  While I did not bake sweets, I did use it in the meatloaf I made for the family.   Please keep that between us.  They had no clue I’d done anything differently.   Well done, Salba.

Now that I and the family have tried chia seeds, I know Salba Smart will be on hand.  And I don’t hear the Chia Pet jingle when I think of chia anymore.  That alone is a reason to give it a try.
