When Do You Put Your Holiday Decorations Away?

December 28, 2012 by Shelly

It is hard to believe, but Christmas 2012 is done and over with it! We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday with their loved ones!

Now that Christmas is over, when do you take down your decorations and put them away? Do you do it right away or leave them up until after January 1st? If you do leave them up until after the first of the year, how long do you typically leave them up?

We typically take ours down the first weekend in January and put them away until next year. I am pretty meticulous at putting our stuff away and try to keep everything labeled and organized. I just find it better to be organized as it makes decorating next year quicker and easier.

My one set of neighbors that I told you about the end of October last year…put their decorations up right after Halloween and they keep them up until the end of January. I find that WAY TOO LONG of a time period…but each their own I guess.

I would love to hear your thoughts if you don’t mind sharing!

When I was living home my mom would have everything down, packed away and back in the closet or garage by January 2nd! This year though I didn’t have any decorations up at my new apartment due to my crazy kitten. The only thing I had out for decoration were my two stocking holders that look like snowflakes for “look”. I plan on putting them away this weekend though.

I like to take mine down the day after Christmas but this year I resisted because my child wanted them up. It is New Year’s Eve, I have to get the tree down today. I just need a living space back. Living in the UK, you are limited on space.

I ususally don’t take down the decoratins until after January 6th. There are 12 days of Christmas!

We usually decorate the first weekend in Dec. then take it all down the day after Christmas! I’m ready for it to go away!!! I do like to decorate with a few little snowmen/snowflake goodies around the house for winter though.

When I put everything up most generally it is all back down the first week of January or even right before New Years. I do like the lights though it looks so magical!

I usually put my Xmas decorations away on New Year’s Day or the day after. I take the Santa wreath on my apartment door down a few days after Xmas and put up the winter pine cone wreath. But, I leave up the small twinkley lights on my 8 ft high rubber tree year around. As you see we don’t buy a traditional Christmas tree but have an island Christmas with Ceramic parrots and large glittery butterflies throughout the tree.

We usually take our decorations down the first week of January. This year I took them down early. We have a 4 week old and we needed room for all of his baby stuff.

I’m like you and typically wait until after the first of the year. It’s too hard to believe that Christmas is over, and I want to stay in the warm, caring spirit. This year my daughter took down the garland and some of the lights right away because she had a day off, but we are leaving our tree up for a little while just to add to the atmosphere of the room.

Most of the items we put up about a week after Thanksgiving and then the tree two weeks before Christmas. We take the tree and most of the decorations down about Jan 6. I have a collection of nutcrackers that stay on a shelf a bit longer than that though.
