Traditional American Thanksgiving Day Foods

November 19, 2012 by Shelly

Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner

It is hard to believe but Thanksgiving is just a few short days away. When it comes to Thanksgiving, we always roast a large 20 to 25 lb. fresh organic turkey and along with that turkey we have mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, lima beans in butter sauce, green bean casserole, homemade dinner rolls, turkey gravy, turkey stuffing, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoe pie and a cherry pie for our desserts.

We go all out for Thanksgiving Day and cook a lot of food! When our dinner guests come to our home for dinner, they know to bring along some plastic containers for take-home leftovers.

When it comes to traditional Thanksgiving Dinner foods, what kind of foods do you enjoy making and/or eating? Does your family tend to stick to traditions and make the same foods year after year…or do you all experiment and try different foods each year?

This year it is just going to be my husband, daughter, and I for Thanksgiving. We still want a good dinner but decided to scale down. We decided to have either mashed potatoes or stuffing for Thanksgiving and the other one for Christmas. My husband decided on mashed potatoes…My daughter and I are now going to have to wait to have our choice of stuffing. We are also having a good sized turkey, deviled eggs, rolls, sweet potatoes (again for my husband) and a veggie tray…not to count pumpkin pie. Even when you think you are scaling down you still end up with tons of food. Oh well, Happy Thanksgiving!

I think my kids would have had a fit if I changed anything. lol It’s pretty much the same thing with the exception being the choice of veggies. Turkey, Ham, lasagna and the biggest favorite of them all for our family is the turnips mashed and mixed with the mashed potatoes. It’s tradition. :)Happy Holidays.

Carol, I have never had turnips mixed in with mashed potatoes. I would love to hear more about doing that!
