16 Classic Holiday Christmas Songs

Content and/or other value provided by our partner, Kia Motors

How many of you are hitting the road this holiday season to go see family and friends? I know we will be taking a mini weekend trip to see a few of my husband’s siblings and we are really looking forward to it.

When we take holiday road trips, we like to listen to the classic holiday tunes, so I have been downloading some of our favorite Christmas music into my husband’s iPod to get ready for our trip.

Today, I thought I would share with all of you some of our favorite holiday songs and perhaps you all can suggest some to us for our upcoming road trip! Here is what I have so far on our holiday play list:

* Away in the Manger
* Oh Holy Night
* Deck the Halls
* Frosty the Snowman
* Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer (daughter’s favorite)
* Hark the Harold Angels Sing
* Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
* Jingle Bell Rock
* Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
* Little Drummer Boy
* Oh Christmas Tree
* We Three Kings
* Winter Wonderland
* Silver Bells
* Joy to the World
* It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

So to-date, we have 16 holiday tunes on our play list and we really want to increase that to 25. I would love to hear from all of our blog readers on what their favorite Christmas songs are! Do you listen to holiday music while taking your family on a holiday road trip?

    We always sing Jingle Bells and 12 days of Christmas when we travel 😀

  2. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    I’ve enjoyed this post and trying to think of other Christmas songs. I don’t think that Feliz Navidad has been mentionedor We Wish you a Merry Christmas or It’s th eMost wonderful time of the Year.

  3. You didn’t mention the artists – do you have anything by the Chipmunks?

  4. Christmas Canon.

  5. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    As it gets closer toChristmas I become more excited. “It’s A MAgical time of the Year” is true for me. Soon I’ll be singing “Let it Snow” unless I think about shoveling and cleaning up!

    Christmas songs keep running through my mind: Here comes Santa Claus, I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. I’m beginning to feel like a little kid and I want Christmas to come now!!

  9. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Christmas specials remind me of other songs such as “Christmas Time is Here” in the Charlie Brown Christmas

  10. Sherry Compton says

    I like to have a mix of instrumental, classic, and modern songs. This way it keeps me upbeat but in touch with the meaning of the season.

  11. janell wagner says

    do you hear what I hear

  12. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    I also like “The First Noel” and “Good King Wencelas” too.

  13. So this is Christmas by John Lennon or Step in Christmas by Elton John.

  14. Sherry Compton says

    I’ve been listening to Straight with No Chaser…I really enjoy their interactions with each other during the songs and their medley is really fun to sing.

  15. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    I always enjoyed The First Noel, hope you have a great road trip!

  16. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    There also is the gospel song: Go tell it on the Mountain.

  17. Jo-Ann Brightman says

  19. Colleen Maurina says

    I love the Christmas song – Carol of the Bells.

  20. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    How about Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire? That’s a tough one to sing…at least for me!

  21. Sherry Compton says

    There are so many versions of the 12 Days of Christmas…classic ones, Straight with No Chaser’s Medley, the Redneck version, the 12 Pains of Christmas…

  22. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    I don’t think anyone has yet mentioned “It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas.”

  23. Colleen Maurina says

    We always listen to Christmas music in the car and sing too! A really different and beautiful Christmas song that I love is “Mary Did You Know?”

  24. Sherry Compton says

    One that I don’t think about and love is John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War is Over).

  25. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Now for more religious songs there is: A CHild This Day is Born or Adestes Fidelis

  26. Sherry Compton says

    Right now, I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas is in my head. While I never wish for bad weather, it is beautiful to have snow on Christmas.

  27. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    Almost forgot the best one! All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth!

  28. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Here is a different song for Xmas: “All I Wnat for Christmas is My 2 Front Teeth”

  29. Sherry Compton says

    I have several Christmas cds because sometimes I just like to listen to a favorite singers version of the song and sometimes I want a mixture…so I have Now That’s What I Call Christmas and cds like the Beach Boys Ultimate Christmas.

  30. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    How about Blue Christmas? Got to have some Elvis rockin out in the car!

  31. Jo-Ann Brightman says

  32. Sherry Compton says

    Songs for the trip back – I’ll Be Home for Christmas and Please Come Home for Christmas

  33. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Here are 2 more songs for Christmas: Have a Holly Jolly Christmas and Here Comes Santa Claus

  34. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    I miss going on road trips, I used to love them! That Kia looks like a pretty nice ride. I like the tinted windows. So far, at least in PA, it’s looking like it might not be a white Christmas.

  35. Angela Kinder says

    That sounds a lot like our Holiday trip playlist- except we actually have a perpetual Christmas playlist on our iPod so we can listen to Christmas music whenever we feel the need, especially on Holiday trips!

  36. Sherry Compton says

    Besides just singing think of ways to get the kids involved…dance “moves” specifically for the songs – I know it wouldn’t be really moves in the car, but you can do fun hand motions. Sometimes just wiggling in tune with the music makes the trip more fun.

  37. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    Jingle Bell Rock is always a fun one to sing along with!

  38. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Here ae some more Christmas songs we enjoy: Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, Blue Christmas and Angels We have heard on High.

  39. Sherry Compton says

    This Christmas, Baby It’s Cold Outside, and All I want for Christmas is You are good romantic Christmas songs.

  40. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    We used to love singing Grandma got run over when we were kids! As a teenager I loved the song All I Want For Christmas is You.

  41. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    Sometimes what I like to do is to get foreign language version of the old favorites and have everyone try to sing them – in French, Spanish or German.

  42. Sherry Compton says

    For kids – and if you can stand it – a great way to do it is to choose a few favorites ex. Frosty or Jingle Bells and get them different versions. Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Flintstones, Barney all have their own.

  43. Jennifer Mae Hiles says

    There is one I’ve always liked. I’m not sure if this is the name but it goes “baby it’s cold outside…I’ll hold your hands their just like ice” I think that is a pretty song. I think they sang it in Elf!

  44. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    I love to listen to Christmas music at home, although it is alittle too much for my husband. On a trip you might want to interspers some non Christmas songs like “I,ve been working on the railroad”, etc.

  45. Jo-Ann Brightman says

    I also would add Little Drummer Boy and I’ve been dreaming of a White Christmas

  46. Sherry Compton says

    We listen to a wide variety from the classics to children’s to quirky. We like to have a wide mix. My daughter and I like Trans Siberian Orchestra and our favorite is Wizard in Winter. If you want off the wall, we like the Twisted Christmas cd with the 12 Pains of Christmas and The Chipmunks Christmas. The original 12 Days of Christmas, All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, Let it Snow, and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus are fun, too. Then, there’s always the Beach Boys Little Saint Nick and Home Alone’s Run Run Rudolph. More favorites are Rudolph and Santa Claus is coming to Town. Wow! There are lots!

    • Thanks Sherry! I love all of your suggestions! I am going to have hubby burn everyone’s suggestions onto a few CDs for all of us and burn a special holiday CD with kiddie songs on it for the Princess Gia.

  47. We have Christmas at our house, I would rather cook for everyone than travel. I am not really a fan of Christmas music but I do like Christmas Eve in Sarajevo by Trans Siberian Orchestra!

    • We have tickets to go see them play and are really looking forward to it. We were told that they put on an awesome holiday concert.

  48. Hubby just downloaded some holiday ringtones to our cell phone. Of course…when I call him on the cell, he programmed the ring tone to “Grandma got run over with a reindeer” so Princess Gia is getting a kick out of that.

  49. OH I agree w. Carol. This is my favorite time of year for music and I have been listening to Christmas music since Oct while I work LOL. Can’t help it HAHA

  50. I love your list. I also like The Little Drummer Boy, Sleigh Bells Ring, and Elvis’s Blue Christmas. I’ve been playing the Christmas station here since last week. It’s non stop Holiday music.There’s also White Christmas by Bing Crosby.Also for me, anything Christmas by Dean Martin. An oldie but a goodie. 🙂
