The New Plumbing Problems We Have Encountered

October 16, 2012 by Shelly

As you all know, we have been remodeling an old home that we purchased for the past 5 months. It has been slow-going at times and this past weekend we ran into a few major plumbing problems. Let me explain.

Hubby built-on a new addition to the home which includes a new master bathroom. My hubby then put in new walls, a skylight ceiling, new tile flooring and even built the new 2-person shower himself. He does this stuff for a living and always does a great job at it.

Well, over the weekend he finally installed the new sink, vanity and the low-flush eco-friendly toilet. He thought everything was fine until we flushed the toilet and immediately heard water pouring out of the ceiling in the basement.

We rush downstairs and take a look at our flooding basement and thought that he didn’t have a pipe connected correctly. However, we were wrong. Here is what REALLY happened!

The previous weekend he was mudding some walls and patching some drywall seams. Once done, he added some water to the mudding compound and dumped it down the drain in the laundry room. He left the water run for 30 minutes and then shut it off.

Well, over the next few days we weren’t running water since we were not over at the house. That watered-down mudding compound never cleared the main-line pipe and turned into a rock hard mess! When we flushed the new toilet, the water couldn’t pass through the big hard clog and the pressure blew out a pipe.

Needless to say, we had to call in a professional plumber to get rid of the main line clog and to repair the damaged pipe. I am really happy though that we were able to get a professional plumber to come out during the weekend to handle the mess for us.

I think my husband has now learned a very valuable lesson and will no longer be dumping things down our drains that shouldn’t be dumped into them. He feels pretty bad about his mistake and hopefully this weekend, we will finish the clean-up and move onto the next room we are remodeling.

Well, there you have it! Our remodeling update for this week!

What a horrible mess. I am sure your husband learned a valuable lesson and since he is a professional it must have been even harder for him to realize what he had done.
