The Cursing Mommy’s voice is somewhere between Phyllis Diller’s and Sylvia Plath’s: a hilariously desperate housewife with a taste for swearing and large glasses of red wine, who speaks to the frustrations of everyday life.

Based on his widely read columns for The New Yorker, Ian Frazier’s uproarious first novel, The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days, centers on a profoundly memorable characters, sprung from an impressively fertile imagination. Structured as a daybook of sorts, we follow the Cursing Mommy – beleaguered wife of Larry and mother of two boys, twelve and eight – as she tries (more or less) valiantly to offer tips on how to do various tasks around the home, only to end up on the ground, cursing, surrounded by broken glass.

My Thoughts:
I love a good laugh when I am reading and this book is certainly one that will make you laugh out loud. The Cursing Mommy is written in a journal type of format and you follow the main character through her days of being a mom and the daily frustrations that throw her over the edge. As a mother to 2 boys and a wife, there are plenty of moments in her days for things to get out of hand.

When crazy things happen, the cursing begins, many times along with what I would call a temper tantrum that is reminiscent of a 3 year old… But at least she gets to drink wine!

As a mom, I can so relate to many of the Cursing Mommy’s stories. Listening to the audio book was a bit difficult with this particular book because of the explosive cursing. While the stories are humorous, you do have to know who is within earshot. I did find that the extensive cursing and tantrums got quite repetitive as I moved through the CD’s. If I was reading the book, I could skip over the cursing and move into the next journal entry for the best part, the laughs.

The Cursing Mommy goes through what all moms and women go through as a parent. The usual, crazy and wacky things our kids do, the frustrating things our husbands do and the normal day to day crazy things that moms get to deal with on a regular basis…. Oh and not to mention, the hubby’s boss, who is not a boss, that keeps texting for some darn reason.

With Cynthia Nixon reading this book for the audio, you can so get right into the character. Cynthia epitomizes The Cursing Mommy and really brings this story to life. If you love a good laugh and a look at motherhood from a mans perspective, you should pick up a copy of this book.  At least you can be safe in saying that you are nothing like her at all… ever – well hopefully!  I hope anyway – for my sake!  I better ask someone and make sure….
