When I was about 5 years old, my family started taking Summer road trips down to the Jersey Shore. These road trips were always a lot of fun because the entire family would get together for them. When I say the “entire family”, I really mean…the entire family! We would take 4 to 5 vehicles and all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. would cram into our cars and head out onto the roads.

To make these road trips more “enjoyable”, the adults in the family would pack for us several road trip ‘goodie’ bags. These goodie bags would have coloring books, crayons, drawing paper, colored pencils, sticker books, mad lib books, travel sized games, candy and snacks! Our road trip journey only took us 6 hours to complete, but it was always a fun time for us kids! We would laugh, tell stories and sing on our way down to the Jersey Shore!

I remember one particular year when I was around the age of 10, my cousin Karen forgot her doll baby at a local rest stop that we had visited on the way down for a bathroom break. We were over an hour into the drive (after the rest stop visit) when she finally realized her doll was missing! She started crying and was driving us all nuts about her “forgotten” doll.

Well, we all had to turn around and drive back to the rest stop to look for her doll. Luckily for my cousin Karen, someone had found her doll and gave it to a clerk at the gas station and the doll was returned to Karen. We all cram back into the car and were on our way again. Once we arrived at our family’s summer beach house, we all unpacked and had ourselves a fantastic time.

I love remembering fun road trip memories like this and to this day, we all “tease” Karen about her forgotten doll. We never left her live it down after then about that dang doll that delayed our vacation fun! hahaha!

Today, I would love to know if your family took road trips when you were a child? Were these road trip vacations something you did every year as a tradition or something you only did once in awhile? Out of all of the road trips you have ever take (as a child or as an adult), which one was your favorite and why? Where is your favorite place to go when hitting the road?
