5 Safety Tips for Carving Pumpkins to Make Jack 'O LanternsCarving pumpkins to turn them into Jack ‘O Lanterns is a fun family activity. It’s a great way for families to spend time together and then you use your artistic creations to decorate for Halloween. Designs can be simple, moderately done or extremely elegant. Heck, there are communities across the nation that hold pumpkin carving contests!

When carving the pumpkins you do need to keep a few things in mind.

1. Use the proper carving tools. You can purchase pumpkin carving kits.

2. Purchase pumpkins and gourds that are firm. You don’t want them to be overly-ripe or soft.

3. If children are involved you need to teach how to carve a pumpkin safely. How to use the proper tools, etc. They should NEVER carve one unattended. An adult should always be present.

4. Don’t use a candle with a real flame inside the pumpkin. That’s a fire hazzard and accident waiting to happen. Purchase flameless candles (battery-operated) if you want to light up your Jack ‘O Lantern.

5. If you insist on using a candle inside your Jack ‘O Lantern don’t burn them close to your home or another building. They should be kept at least 10 feet away.
