5 Fall Planting Tips for Crocus Bulbs

One of the most popular spring flowers for home gardening happens to be the Crocus. If you are a lover of this beautiful flower, now is the time to get your Crocus Bulbs planted and into the ground.

Home gardeners often times select the beautiful Crocus for their flower gardening because they are easy-to-care for, low maintenance and do well in a variety of different climates.

Here are some planting and gardening tips for those of you who are considering adding the Crocus to your flower gardens this Fall.

1. You need to purchase the freshest flower bulbs as possible. You want bulbs that are not damaged and contain no mold growth. If the bulbs are sealed in a package, look for a packaging date or expiration date on the package.

2. Once you purchase your bulbs, read all of the planting instructions that came with them. It is recommended that you plant your bulbs within 2 weeks of purchasing them. Store them in a cool, dark and dry place, until planting time.

3. The Crocus is a “hearty” flower and can be planted in rock gardens, flower beds or used as borders. They do well in grassy areas or in the woodlands. They should be planted in an area that gets full sun or in an area that gets light shade.

4. You should plant your bulbs in Fall, about 6 weeks before you expect a hard frost to hit. The bulbs should be planted 4″ to 6″ in depth and 3″ to 4″ apart. It is recommend to plant them in groupings of 12 or more in one particular area.

5. After planting, water your newly planted bulbs until the soil is wet, but not overly saturated with water. If an unexpected frost is expected within 2 to 3 weeks of planting, cover your area to protect your newly planted bulbs from the harmful effects of frost, which can damage them.

Now that Fall has arrived, it is time to get busy planting all of your flower bulbs that you want to bloom in the Spring and early Summer seasons. Take the time to educate yourself on proper planting techniques, so that you will have a beautiful blooming floral garden next year.
