Fabulous Figs

Do you like figs? I bet the only time you think of them is when you eat a Fig Newton or something like that. Me too! In my travels of the California orchards, I grabbed a photo of some fig plants as this area happens to be a large producer of figs. I think that many people are not really familiar with a fig and what it is, and maybe you don’t even care! LOL But they are an important crop and interesting looking too.

The type of figs we grow here are trimmed to stay in a bush although there are some farmers that have trees. We basically grow four varieties of Fresh Figs in California. They are Brown Turkey, Black Mission, Kadota and Calimyrna and you can find them fresh from May to December. Figs can be dried or frozen for up to 3 months to get the fresh fruit flavor.

Favorite ways to enjoy figs are fresh sliced into salads or wrapped in prosciutto or making them into jams and chutney’s. The taste of a fig is sweet and it has a very nice flavor. Try one next time you see some.

I really did not know anything about the different types of figs and how they are grown. I shall have to research the differences in the varieties and try figs more.
