Dinner Planning on a Budget

July 31, 2012 by Shelly

When you have a family, nothing brings you together like sitting around the table and having dinner. While eating dinner together can be fun, it is also getting expensive. Even some of the simplest meals are getting hard to afford as grocery spending is higher than ever. How do families make it work without having to sacrifice on quality?

Set the Menu

If you are interested in saving money on your grocery bills, it is usually a good idea to figure out what you are going to eat in advance. Sit down each week and come up with a menu for every day for the rest of the week. Once you have a mini set, then you can create a shopping list based off of those things. Many people simply go to the grocery store and buy things that look good, without regard to what they need for the week. If you’ll take the time to plan out what you need, you’ll avoid eating too much and spending too much each week.

Deals and Discounts

When you are trying to get healthy food on your budget, it might be difficult to do. If you will do a little bit of careful planning and look for deals and discounts, you can more easily afford the food you want. Most grocery stores have items that are on sale every week, and are advertised in a flier. You can also cut out coupons in the Sunday paper or get them online to help cut the costs. When you combine coupons with discounts, you can really start to save some money.

Keeping Your Finances in Line

Regardless of how you try to save on your grocery budget, you need to keep your finances in order. Balance your checkbook regularly before you go shopping, so that you know exactly how much money you have to spend. This can help you avoid insufficient funds fees along the way.

If you’ll take the time to plan out your grocery list and set a budget, you’ll be able to save money in the long run. Taking a proactive role can make a big difference.
