Ocarina Premium Flavored Honey
Today, I would like to introduce you to Ocarina Honey, a premium flavored honey company founded by Jesse Funk, whose passion for cooking and baking things was influenced by his mother, grandmother, and also a childhood neighbor. Ocarina Honey was born out of Jesse’s desire to create something with deep and delicious flavors that nobody had seen before. He noticed that honey, a naturally varying substance in terms of flavor, had yet to be experimented with. From this he set out to craft his premium flavored honeys. Ocarina Honey is out of Kansas and all of their raw honey is purchased from local beekeepers in the Greater Kansas City area.
My Review: I was fortunate enough to be able to choose two flavors of Ocarina Honey to review for you all. Turns out I chose two of his best sellers – and I can see why! These honeys are delicious! Each is packaged in a corked square glass bottle, and the consistency is think enough to be able to pour the honey right from the bottle, yet thick enough that it doesn’t come spilling out all at once.
Horchata Honey – A vanilla, cinnamon, and spice flavored honey. Horchata is a traditional Latin drink made with rice, often vanilla, and always with cinnamon. When I took a whiff of it, the aroma reminded me of Chai spice. I love Chai Tea, so my first instinct was to sweeten a cup of tea with it, added a little milk, and the taste was somewhat similar, though more subtle, and very good.
Apple Brandy Honey – Described as “a taste of down-home cooking without the alcohol”, this too is a very versatile flavored honey. I immediately tasted the apple brandy flavor in this honey. Though the brandy was not overpowering (a fear I had), it did compliment the flavor of the apple, bringing back a memories of my Grandmother’s apple pie.
I was so happy to find a bunch of recipes on the Ocarina Honey website. Some for a specific flavor of Ocarina Honey, others flexible for your flavor of choice. We grilled chicken over this past weekend, and used the Apple Brandy Honey in a recipe I found for Honey Barbecue Sauce. I wish the pictures I took hadn’t turned out fuzzy, so you could see how good it looked, but it tasted even better. The only picture that really shows you the honey is the one I took when we put honey on some warm biscuits at dinner on that first night. (Pictured right)
I just wished I had time to try more of the other recipes on the Ocarina Honey website. They even have a tutorial for cooking with honey, and offer a free honey cookbook for download. I have enough of the Horchata flavored honey to make the recipe I found for sticky buns next, and my husband has asked me to make another batch of the honey barbecue sauce. All 4 of us here gave both flavors a big thumbs up!
At Ocarina, the premium flavored honey has no added artificial or natural sweeteners. Just the delicious taste of pure natural raw honey. Both honey and all of their flavorings are gluten-free, so they are safe to be used for people with celiac disease, or those who simply want to avoid gluten in their cooking. Each honey jar is created and filled by hand.
If you would like to purchase Ocarina Premium Flavored Honey, you can purchase them directly from the website. Each 10.3 oz. jar retails for $13.95, or try the entire collection of all 5 flavors for $59.95. Their current lineup of honeys includes Horchata, Grapefruit Pomegranate, Mango Passion Fruit, Pear Pineapple and Apple Brandy.
Thank you to Jesse at Ocarina Honey for generously sending me two of their premium flavored honeys to review for all of you. My family and I love them both!
