Tips on How to Get Rid of Head Lice
How many of you have either had head lice or have had children who had head lice? For those of you who have dealt with head lice, what did you do to remove lice? My topic today is all about that dirty little word…lice!
A few weeks ago my sister-in-law called me up in a complete panic! Well, she found lice in both of her son’s hair and was completely freaking out about it. Although I have never experienced it, I do know quite a bit about it from the days when I used to work in a local hospital.
I told my sister-in-law to calm down and that it’s a very common thing for kids to get. Matter of fact, millions of children here in the U.S.A. get head lice each and every year. Once you do get it, it is extremely important to tackle the problem right away before it gets out of hand.
The first thing you want to do is get yourself some good lice removal shampoo. Everyone who lives in the household or who has slept in the household recently, will need to be treated with the shampoo. Some of these shampoos are one-time-use and others you will need to use several times to effectively kill the lice.
Most lice removal shampoos come with a special lice comb that you will need to use to remove all of those lice eggs, called nits. It is a fine tooth comb that you will need to use on your child’s head and should be used for several days after treating the head with lice removal shampoo.
You will need to wash all of the bed linens in the home in very hot water. You can purchase laundry detergent that is specifically made to kill lice and their eggs from washable fabrics like bed linens, towels and rugs. In addition, they recommend that you purchase a lice killing spray that you can use to spray down curtains, furniture and mattresses.
When it comes to killing lice, it is important that you cover all of the bases and that includes the head, body (yes, you can get lice on other hairy areas of your body), furniture, bedding, etc. You want to treat everything at the same time so that the lice is not moving from one area or person to another.
Lice is a big problem and millions of people are affected by it each and every year. It has nothing to do with being too dirty and even the cleanest kids can bring it home from school or summer camp.
The most important thing you need to do is get on top of that lice problem right away. Any delay in treatment can really spawn an over-infestation that can be extremely hard to get rid of, so if lice hits your family, tackle it immediately!
How many of you have dealt with lice in your own homes? If you have, what did you do to get rid of it? Do you know how the lice came into your home? How long did it take to get rid of the entire lice problem?
